SUNDAY MATCH REPORTS 2008 Sunday June 29th Wollaston Sunday Xl v Wellingborough Old Grammarians Sunday Xl Won After having a convincing win against O.G.s Sunday eleven at the mad mile earlier in the season, the same opponents brought a stronger eleven to London Road for the return fixture on Sunday. With Wollaston fielding a weakened side including two Under 14’s - one of which was on debut, and the other playing only his second men’s game - plus the Crispin’s landlord, Wollaston lost the toss and were asked to field. With an in experienced bowling line up, Chris Perry had to chop and change his bowlers frequently so that the O.G.s batters could not settle. Matt Jones and David Clarkson opened up with the ball and took some early stick, but eventually the latter picked up the wicket of their overseas player and number three batsman in the same over. The introduction of the Perry brothers was needed urgently to make a further breakthrough, and Jamie, bowling better at this stage than his sibling, bowled six tight overs - collecting a valuable wicket on the way. After a well earned break he returned to the attack for the final overs and added another "w" beside his name.. Alex Melia took a wicket and bowled with a lot of encouragement for the future in his debut performance, and Scott Bailey also bowled well and did an excellent job patrolling the deep cover boundary for much of the innings. Jones, who was encouraged by his captain to "give it another go" did come back on for his second spell and bowled with improved accuracy and guile -eventually picking up the wicket of their lady cricketer, and finished with figures of 1 for 31 off his eight overs. Clarkson proved the pick of the attack however, finishing with four wickets. Andy ( Mittens) Silsby had another try-out behind the stumps and again looked very much at home, resulting in his trial being extended with a view to a two week rolling contract. O.G.s set a very challenging 242 to win in forty overs. When Wollaston batted the Sunday all-rounder Matt Jones opened with the 14 year old Marcus Gross who looked quite steady until falling in the 9th over. Jones however was the main stay for the Wollaston chase and when he was finally caught at deep mid wicket for 116 the chase was on. Other contributions in the middle order came from Clarkson and Hadyn James. This then set up Mark Ralph and Chris Perry to finish the game in the last 6 overs for second day running. Mark now being known as Mark ‘Mike Hussey’ Ralph and Chris, known as Chris ‘Michael Bevan’ Perry. It was a very good friendly for the club and people benefited from the game. The young lads who came in to the team didn’t disappoint and look promising for the future O.G.s 241 – 8 off 40 - Wollaston 242 – 6 off 39.5 _______________________________________ Sunday June 22nd Eight - a - Side Competition Print + Data Source came out on top against HSPG in the final of the annual event where Tom Woods starred for the winners. Steve Musgrave and Adam Tee won the prize for the highest number of sixes during the day, but Tee was the clear winner of the prize for the furthest-hit maximum when he launched a typical Musgrave pie far into the blue yonder. John Pike umpired stoically, Andy Luck (the event organiser) ran a tasty barbeque and Sian Patchett did an admirable job behind the bar. Behind the scenes Chairman Andy Silsby was his normal, tireless self, making sure all bases were covered, and he was well supported by Simon Driver. Neal Perry - straight back from Paul Bates' party, where the wine had apparently flowed- gave an entertaining speech and presented the prizes - eventually! Matt Jones turned up! _____________________________________________________________________________
Sunday 8th June 2008 Wollaston Sunday Eleven Vs Northants Under 17’s / Development squad On Sunday we welcomed the Northants Development Squad to Wollaston. The squad comprises mostly of seventeen year olds who are trying to get to the forefront of Kevin Innes's mind, with a view to selection for the ECB Under 17 County Championship and One Day Cup. Wollaston batted first on a drying, but very good pitch. Liam Bates and Simon Driver opened up and Driver was unfortunately judged caught behind with only one run to his name. However Bates continued in fine form and carried his bat for a superb 121 not out with excellent support from Mark Ralph. Wollaston posted 187 – 8 in their allotted 40 overs. At tea Bates complained of dehydration only to be told by a less supportive spectator going by the name of Steve Musgrave “to get on with it!” He followed the experienced Australian's advice and fielded in the shade for most of the Northants innings. The Northants openers started well and played David Clarkson and Neil Sutcliffe very confidently, so with Simon Driver still fired up after his controversial dismissal, captain Chris Perry thought it would be a good time to bring him on - if it was only to keep the runs down. However, Driver took it one step further and bowled with pace, aggression and accuracy and picked up four wickets for his efforts. This brought Wollaston right back into the game. Now that the openers had been removed, and Clarkson was still chomping at the bit to prove a point to his age group colleagues, he was brought on for a second spell where his line and length were an improvement on his earlier spell. He ripped through the late middle order to also claim four wickets for himself. This really gave us a sniff at a win as the youngsters had only two wickets left - although they only needed 21 to win. With six overs left in the game and Northants needing this modest amount to win, both Clarkson and Driver had completed their allocated 8 overs. So captain Perry had another tough decision to make. And after due consideration he brought himself on at one end and brother Jamie Perry on at the other. It paid off ! Jamie took the 9th wicket - and bowled tidily, leaving Chris to get an easy caught and bowled to win the game. Wollaston won by 2 runs as Northants closed on 185 all out. It was a close game enjoyed by all and I am sure that both teams got a little bit out of the contest.
Wollaston Sunday Xl v Old Grammarians May 11th away Wollaston 221 for 9 off 40 overs Old Grammarians 160 for 7 off 40 overs Fourteen year old Marcus Grose made his Wollaston debut and opened the innings. His shots both sides of the wicket had an air of maturity and took him to an impressive 29 before departing . Andy Luck made 62 and Simon Driver 54 not out O.G.s' got nowhere near their target and closed on 160 for 7 off their allotted 40 overs. Jamie Perry bowled well for his 2 wickets _________________________________________________________________________ |
