PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

What a fantastic season – Congratulations to Harmit and his team – having already won this division [or it’s equivalent] on four other occasions without due reward - we managed to gain promotion despite all the politics, suspended sentences, rival teams managing to get results when everywhere else was flooded – or am I getting paranoid?!! For some reason it’s never been straight forward for Wollaston over the years, and we have had to put the setbacks behind us and soldier on.

The first eleven have been at this level for a few seasons and in my opinion the current squad – and I mean 15 – 16 players – not just 11 – are the best I can remember.

The spirit within the Club has been fantastic – you could see what it meant to the players – talk about grown men crying – and you can include the loyal band of supporters too – the relief was monumental.

The success of the first team would not have been possible without a supply of squad players from the second team both willing and capable of helping out – this made Brett’s win at Rushden all the more important.

What does the Club do now? – we are in uncharted waters – its going to be a challenge for the Club as a whole. Can we step up at all levels – I don’t just mean playing – can we raise our income – can we attract a major sponsor – we know our ground is considered one of the best - but do we need to do more? Is our junior cricket at the right level and should we be playing on Sundays? Can we improve our bar takings – encourage more use of the bar – in fact the big question is how far do the members want to take the Club.

I feel honoured to have been the President at this time having followed such a distinguished list of previous Presidents and hope that the players can enjoy the considerable challenges to come – give of their best – and be proud of what’s already been achieved, regardless of where we finish.
