After losing the toss, Wollaston were made to
work hard for their wickets in the heat, as Rob White made a well constructed
century for the ON's. After an indifferent start, Wollaston bounced back with
three quick wickets to slow the ON's progress at 60-3, but contributions from
Mobushar Khawaja (27) and Dan Harris (35) in the middle order supported White
through to his century which came off 152 balls.
The Wollaston wickets were shared between Coutts 9-0-57-2, Perry 15-5-63-2,
and Musgrave 16-1-58-3, as the ON's declared after the 53rd over leaving
Wollaston 248 to chase.
The pace of Afaq Baber caused early problems for Wollaston removing Musgrave
in his first over and Jones in his second, and when Mark Ralph was also
removed cheaply from the bowling of Heathfield at the other end, at 13 for 3
this was not the sort of start Wollaston were looking for.
Jimmy Hart continued his good vein of form making 34, and Shelford, Bright and
Perry all made good starts without being able to kick on and forge that vital
partnership in the middle innings, if Wollaston were going to have a chance of
chasing the total down. A late onslaught from Liam Bates 59 off 60 balls,
earned Wollaston two extra batting points, but his efforts came to an end in
the 49th over after top edging a sweep off the bowling of White.

Winning the
toss and electing to bat, Wollaston were soon in trouble and after fifteen overs
- with the scoreboard showing 20 for 5, an early finish looked on the cards.
But a
captain's innings from number five Paul Jones (40) and an inspiring return from
injury from number seven Nathan Richards (67) turned the game on its head and
set it up for a rapid 32 from Craig Boddington. At tea, after 45 overs, a
satisfying 175 for 8 was on the board.
Wollaston's seamers had a tremendous afternoon. The quartet of Alex Melia (6 for
22 off 13 overs), Robert Bassin 3 for 16 off 8) Josh Steggles(1 for 16 off 8)
and Lewis North-Row (0 for 8 off 5) did not relax their grip on Rushden's
batting line up and win number two for the Thirds' was thoroughly
deserved.

Report
Wollaston put
in a dominant performance to widen the gap at the bottom of the table against
fellow strugglers Burton Latimer.
After loosing the toss Wollaston were asked to bat first, but before a ball was
bowled the heavens opened and the players had to endure 3 hours of heavy rain,
and an early tea much to the delight of some of the boys (no names mentioned)
before the umpires said that play could start at 3.30pm in a game reduced to 37
overs per side.
Steve Musgrave (21) and Jimmy Hart (19) both made good starts for
Wollaston, capitalising on some early loose deliveries as the Burton opening
bowlers found their stride in the damp conditions. But when both players snicked
off and Wollaston lost the wickets of Mark Ralph and Liam Bates in quick
succession, it was left to Matt Jones and David Shelford to re-build the
Wollaston innings to set a total that would put the pressure on Burton later in
the game.
Both players did exactly that with Jones playing in his usual gritty manner,
complimented by the attacking flare of Shelford. Both players put their foot on
the accelerator at exactly the right time for Wollaston, with Shelford reaching
his half century first, shortly followed by Jones, who made it consecutive 50's
in so many weeks and showed the sort of form we need him to continue for the
rest of the year.
Jones eventually finished on 73 not out, and Shelford 74 not out in a
partnership worth around 160 (sorry no figures on play cricket), which allowed
the skipper to declare on 201 with two overs left, and leave Wollaston 39 overs
to bowl the opposition out. Ethan Delargy the pick of the Burton bowlers with 3
for 53 from his 8 overs.
Brimming with confidence from his innings, Shelford troubled the Burton openers
with his away swing, beating the outside edge on numerous occasions, but along
with fellow opening partner Jamie Perry, were unable to make that vital
breakthrough with the new ball. However Shelford could not be kept out of the
action when Daniel Bird miss timed a drive to be well caught low down by
Shelford at mid off, off the bowling of a fired up Jameson Coutts, who replaced
Perry at the pavilion end.
Steve Musgrave replaced Shelford at the Strixton end and despite being on the
receiving end of some lusty blows by Alistair McClure, Musgrave fought back in
his usual manner, bowling opener Alan Sewell and removing McClure caught at mid
wicket by Chris Perry.
After an aggressive burst by Coutts, the skipper decided to bring himself into
the attack and justified his decision claiming the wicket of his Burton
counterpart Scott Sanders, after getting one to bounce which brushed the glove
of Sanders, and was well caught behind by Carter. With the top four batsmen now
removed Wollaston started to grow in confidence but knew they still had lots of
work to do.
Musgrave claimed his third wicket of the afternoon after Luke Odell was out LBW
attempting the sweep. Damian Paul showed some defensive resistance for Burton,
whilst Nick Shelford was intent on attack, hitting six 4's on his way to 33, to
continue his families good day with the bat. With time starting to run out for
Wollaston, Coutts was brought back into the attack for his second spell, and
when Jones caught Shelford at deep cow corner off the bowling of Perry, and
Coutts was too good for Paul, with David Shelford claiming his second good catch
of the day to add to a good all round performance, Wollaston were still gunning
for victory.
With Chris Perry completing his 11 overs, it was left to Coutts to get two
wickets from the last over of the game, and despite bowling Aiden Cunningham off
the fourth delivery of the over, the Burton number 11, Bryan Ogilvie confidently
blocked out the last two deliveries leaving Wollaston just short of victory, in
a close finish. Pick of the bowling figures for Wollaston included Musgrave
11-6-36-3, Chris Perry 11-3-32-3 and Jameson Coutts 10-0-31-3.
A great all round performance, which allowed Wollaston to amass 18 points from
the match, and push them 30 points clear from Burton, who remain at the bottom
of the table.
Wollaston must take this confidence into Tuesday nights T20 match against Saints
at home, and next Saturdays away trip to Brixworth, which brings the season to
its half way point.

Wollaston
2nds travelled to a rather wet Great Oakley with the rain was hammering down,
then about two hours later the sun came out the game then started at 4 o'clock.
Wollaston
batted first Marcus Shelton and Harry Broome opened with some indifferent
strokes and things didn't go our way, but Patrick Bright was the stand out man
he played some lovely shots on his way to a fine 41. Unfortunately we were 100
all out!
When it came to bowling Kam Bahra got a wicket second ball which gave the boys a
great start and the opposition were on 47/1 when a great throw by Charlie
Elderton executed a great run-out which gave us our second wicket.
Then came the third - it was a stumping by Cam Pike off the bowling of Nathan
Healey.
Great Oakley
eventually won the game in the 20th over but there were a number of positives
which can be taken from the the bowling display and hopefully we can
get another win next week!

Scorecard
Matthew Jones 63 David Shelford
36 John Pike 25
John Pike 3 for 34 off 11 overs
Although the result may not
show it, Wollaston put up a much better performance this Saturday against Oundle
and must build from here, with a key couple of fixtures pending over the next
few weeks.
Taking the brave decision to bat first after
winning the toss, on what looked like a flat pitch, Wollaston got off to the
worst possible start with Steve Musgrave being given out LBW off the first ball
of the match. Matt Jones and Jimmy Hart battled hard against the pace of Jeftha
with the new ball, but when Hart was caught at short mid wicket off the bowling
of Jeftha for 12, it was left to Jones and Mark Ralph to build a partnership to
put Wollaston back into the game.
Ralph worked hard for his 19, but was bowled, looking to be aggressive against
the off spin of Ramsden, and Jones looked good on his way to his second half
century of the season, eventually being trapped LBW for 63 when Jeftha was
re-introduced into the attack. At 115 for 5 with nearly 20 overs left Wollaston
still had work to do to post a competitive total. David Shelford played the type
of innings me know he is capable of, well supported by Coutts and Pikey who
produced some fire power towards the end of the innings.
Shelford was caught off the last ball of the innings for 36, whilst Pike made
25n.o off 13 balls two fours and two of his freakishly big sixes, to leave
Wollaston 190 for 8 off their 55 overs.
The Oundle openers both made good starts, and it was Shelford who eventually
found the edge of Mark Hodgson (24) duly accepted by Carter behind to make the
breakthrough. Perry and Pike replaced the opening bowlers respectively, and
between them slowly started to draw Wollaston back into the game applying
pressure from both ends, Pike eventually rewarded for his persistence with the
scalp of Harry Ramsden (41), when he looked on his way to a half century, and
James Chambers (32) both LBW, and Jeftha (20) caught at mid wicket by Perry.
Phil Adams played a captains innings for his side, and carried his bat for 46
which took the game away from Wollaston, when it was potentially heading towards
a close finish. As a bowling unit Wollaston were maybe guilty of bowling too
many four balls, frustratingly towards the end of an over when they looked like
they had the upper hand.
This left Wollaston with 9 points from the game, to keep them 17 points ahead of
Burton Latimer at the bottom of the table, who they face next week in which I'm
sure will be a hard fought encounter.

THIRD ELEVEN RUN CHASE FALLS SHORT AT GUMLEY
Gumley 289 for 9 in 45 overs
Wollaston 212 for 8 in 45 overs Lost 9 points
Scorecard
Josh Steggles 98 not out
Sam Bayes 25 Lewis North-Row 4 for 17 off 6 overs
With young Dan Hodson
making his debut behind the stumps the Thirds travelled to deepest
Leicestershire to take on high flying Gumley on a beautiful summer's day.
Losing the toss the hosts
opted to bat on a wicket that offered hope to the bowlers with the odd ball
keeping low.
Hopes were raised when Josh
Steggles clean bowled opening bat Wilkinson for 7 and Lewis North-Row had number
three R. Krause excellently caught low down by Harmit Bahra at slip .
However, things didn't
progress positively for the hosts and father and son D Pickering and JA
Pickering proceeded to add 231 for the third wicket with the former making 122
and the latter 91.
Eventually, after a lot of
chasing and fetching Nathan Healey removed D Pickering which triggered a
collapse which saw the next highest score being just eight! Lewis
North-Row took the bowling honours with a fine spell of six overs 4 for for 17.
In reply Wollaston were not
dismayed and made a brave come back with Josh Steggles leading the way with 98
not out, Sam Bayes 25 and Dan Hodson 9 not out. Although 77 short at the close
it was a good effort and special batting from Master Steggles - made extra
especial with his Mum on the scorebook!

June 16th Knock-out Cup
Brixworth CC 156 for 3 in 20 overs,
Wollaston CC 140 for 9 in 20 overs.
Wollaston's poor trot of form continued in the 20/20 competition, with the hosts
ending up 16 runs short, chasing Brixworth's first innings total of 156.
Wollaston worked hard with both the ball in hand, and in the field, but the
combination of some clean striking and good running between the wickets, saw
Brixworth reach 156 in their allotted 20 overs, with John Pike 3-0-18-1 and
Steve Musgrave 4-0-29-1 the pick of the Wollaston bowlers.
When big guns Musgrave and Jimmy Hart were both dismissed cheaply at the top of
the order, Wollaston saw themselves behind the eight ball early in their reply,
but knowing how this format can change quickly, particularly with a couple of
good overs Wollaston knew they still had the fire power in their line up to
compete. Matt Jones (39) and Mark Ralph (34) both went at a run a ball
respectively, but the run rate continued to increase for Wollaston the longer
the innings went on, and a succession of quick wickets made life even more
difficult.
Some good hitting from Coutts (23) and Carter (16 n.o) gave the innings some
respectability, but with 24 needed off the last over, off the bowling of ex
Northants bowler Lee Daggett, things were never going to be an easy, and
Wollaston eventually ended 16 runs short.
A disappointing result, but the players must take the positives from the game,
and transfer this to our efforts on a Saturday, where the First Team travel to
Oundle Town, for another tough encounter.
Please note however that Wollaston progress
to the next round of the Cup by virtue of the fact that Brixworth contravened a
registration rule. We now play Northampton Saints in the next round.

Scorecard
Chris Perry 63 and 4 for 73 off 15 overs

Steve Musgrave 3 for 42 off 15 overs
Finedon who
chose to bat first got off to a good start with openers Howgego and Daniels
quickly reaching their 50 partnership, in less than 10 overs. The skipper was
rewarded by implementing early bowling changes with Shelford bowling Daniels and
Jamie Perry removing Howgego caught behind, in quick succession.
Wollaston continued to toil away and the introduction of Chris Perry and
Musgrave into the attack applied pressure to the Finedon middle order, who built
steadily without any of their batsmen going on to make a half century. Perry
struck twice in consecutive balls to remove Spratt and Davis both LBW, whilst
Musgrave was rewarded with the wickets of Hofbauer, Dunne both caught, and
Finedon captain Chris Goode, who made 40 before being stumped by Carter. The
Finedon skipper was happy to declare early in the 52nd over with the score on
243 for 9. Chris Perry 15-1-73-4 and Musgrave 15-2-42-3 were the pick of the
bowling figures for Wollaston.
Musgrave, Jones and Hart all got starts for Wollaston at the top of the order,
but a brace of wickets from the swing bowling of Will Sneath saw Wollaston slip
to 65 for 6, and the lower middle order were once again left too much work to
do. Chris Perry made a well constructed 63 to show some fighting spirit for
Wollaston, boosted by some clean hitting by Coutts (33), and well supported by
Jamie Perry (15), but the skipper was unable to add the additional batting point
for Wollaston, when he was dismissed in the 44th over, with Wollaston finishing
on 170 all out.
Will Sneath finished with figures of 17-5-44-6 for Finedon.

Arriving at the ground in
torrential rain, all players were hesitant of whether we would get onto the
field at all, but when the sun came out a revised game of 43 overs per side was
agreed by the umpires and play commenced at 2.30pm.
Wollaston bowled first, and got off to a good start with JJ Coutts bowling
Rushton opener and skipper Jonathon Carpenter with one that nipped back to hit
leg stump, in the third over. Dropped catches once again proved costly, as Ben
Mansell was dropped a couple of times, but made the most of his luck and went on
to make an excellent hundred, eventually being dismissed for 130 off 110 balls,
caught in the deep by Driver off the bowling of Musgrave.
Mansell was well supported by Andrew Reynoldson (62), and the Rushton skipper
decided to bring the innings to a halt when Daniel Bendon was out LBW off the
bowling of Chris Perry. Not pretty reading but the wickets were shared as
follows Musgrave 13-1-70-2, Coutts 4-1-31-1, Chris Perry 7.2-1-36-1. A tough day
in the field for the Wolly boys!
The batting didn't get any easier either... With only Musgrave reaching double
figures in the top 6, Wollaston quickly slipped to 28 for 6, and despite the
efforts of Chris Perry (12), Simon Driver (19) and Mark Carter (21 not out), the
lower order were left far too much to do, and the slim chance of hanging on for
a draw disappeared when last man Jamie Perry was dismissed in the 35th over.
Wollaston eventually all out for a disappointing 87.
Wollaston host Finedon at home next week.

A well
deserved and satisfying performance in a reduced-over format saw Wollaston
Thirds achieve their first victory of the season away at Bowden.
Under
the stand-in captaincy of 16 year old Josh Steggles our young seam attack bowled
in a tight and disciplined manner to reduce the hosts to 74 for 9 in the maximum
35 overs.
Alex
Melia ripped the heart out of Bowden's middle order and at the same time kept
runs to a minimum on a damp, slow and low pitch. His 4 for 12 off 11 overs was a
just reward for his accuracy and concentration. He was well supported by Robert
Bassin, Josh Steggles, Lewis North-Row and Sam Bayes who all finished among the
wickets.
A
decent opening reply saw the experience of Andy Silsby and Brett Hanson put 39
on the board for the first wicket with the former departing with 12 to his name
in the fifteenth over. A middle order collapse saw 4 wickets fall in quick
succession before the skipper (9 not out ) joined Brett (33 not out) to ease
Wollaston home with 5 wickets down in the 26 over.

With both
Robert Bassin and Marcus King making their senior league debuts Wollaston went
into their first home game looking to reap enough points to overtake Houghton
and lift off the bottom of the table.
With Paul
Jones winning the toss and opting to bowl, things were going to plan -
especially when Josh Steggles and Bassin removed the visitors' top three to
leave them at a precarious 3 for 3.
However,
number five Henry Blencowe (25) and number six Mike Sawle dug in and added 63
runs before the former was well caught by Nathan Dawson on the long on boundary.
However, Sawle was undeterred and aided by several dropped catches unbelievably
added 97 for the last wicket with number eleven Daniel Skevington (14). The
tenth wicket transformed the game and put Houghton in a commanding position with
Sawle finishing on 94 not out.
On the plus
side, Robert bowled well on debut and finished with 4 for 39 off 12 overs. David
Ward 3 for 50 off 13, Josh Steggles 2 for 23 off 10 and Nick Dawson 1 for 37 off
10 overs.
In reply.
Wollaston's start was no better than their opponents and once again 3 for 3 was
on the board, but this time the situation did not improve dramatically compared
to the pre-tea scenario.
Except
for the Dawsons - Nick 35 and Nathan 25, no one else reached double figures and
a disappointing batting display closed with Wollaston 102 all out in 29 overs

With recent batting
performances in mind, when the skipper was finally successful with the toss of
the coin, he had no hesitation in asking Saints to bat. Wollaston had to work
hard for the initial breakthrough, with the Saints openers posting 63 runs
before David Shelford broke the dead lock from a miss timed drive caught by the
skipper at short cover. In the absence of Gibbs and Driver, Jamie Perry made his
first appearance for the 1st Xl this season, and justified his selection finding
the edge of the left handed Patterson in his second over, for a regulation
caught behind by Carter.
Perry then struck again quickly after some well thought out fielding positioning
caused Dolley to flick the inswing of Perry off his legs, straight into the
hands of Bates in a catching position behind square. Coutts was re-introduced
into the attack for a quick burst and rewarded the captain when Park, often a
nemesis for Wollaston, edged behind for a well taken one handed catch by Carter.
Saints skipper Mark Wolstenholme, played in his usual attacking manner, but with
wickets falling around him, at the hands of the Perry brothers, Wollaston seemed
to be squeezing the pressure on the Saints, which showed when Wolstenholme ran
himself out after some good work by Bates at mid wicket.
Some interesting switch hitting by the Saints lower order, didn't last long and
Wollaston wrapped the innings up in the 47th over, with Saints finishing on 160.
An excellent all round bowling performance by Wollaston with figures as follows;
Coutts 9-0-54-1, Shelford 11-1-35-1, Jamie Perry 11-5-24-3, Chris Perry
10-4-2-3, and Musgrave 5.5-1-20-1.
Looking to put the last three weeks demons behind us, Wollaston started badly,
when Harry Broom was dismissed first ball caught behind. Jones was caught for
16 with the score on 37, and Wollaston would now need to find a partnership in
the middle order if they were to secure victory. Musgrave (45) and Ralph
(27) both played well, putting on 56 for the third wicket before, Ralph was left
short of his ground attempting a quick single, and Musgrave was bowled just
before the drinks break.
Bright, Bates and Carter all failed to get going, however some aggressive play
by Shelford (20 not out) and Coutts (26 not out) which comprised of 5 fours and
a six to win the match, but any nerves to bed, much to the relief of the
skipper, all players and spectators involved.
Wollaston must build from this for next weeks away trip to Stoney Stratford, at
Campbell Park.

I was hoping
to be writing to you today with a more positive feel to the piece, however a
lack of runs has again cost the 1st Xl victory as we slipped to our third defeat
of the season.
After openers Jones and Broom had put on a 50 partnership to set the
foundations, the middle order failed to find any fluidity to their batting, with
no player going on to make more than 25 runs, which once again left Wollaston
well below par after managing to bat their full 55 overs.
In contrast the opposition quickly moved to 80 without loss, but things soon
changed when Liam Bates removed the Horton opener with a spinning delivery, and
the Horton number 3 hit a waist high full toss down the throat of JJ Coutts on
the square leg boundary next ball, it was down to Perry at the other end to
complete the Team Hatrick! removing the other Horton opener LBW. Perry was
unlucky not to make it 4 from 4 after a close LBW was turned down, and the
opposition seemed to be rattled!
Perry applied the pressure from one end and was often too good for the Horton
Batsmen, deserving more from his 13 overs, and despite the efforts of Musgrave
who claimed 4 wickets during his spell, as a unit the other bowlers averaged out
at around 5 runs per over which when defending a low total made things too easy
for the opposition at times.
The same old cliché of another 30 runs on the Wollaston scoreboard, may have
made for an exciting finish, but it was not be, and picking up 7 bowling should
be taken as a positive en rote to defeat.
Wollaston entertain the Saints at home next week, and as always your support
will be much appreciated following the difficult start to the season for the
team.

Another disappointing
batting display saw the 1st Xl slip to their second defeat of the season. After
losing the toss and being asked to bat, the Wollaston top order never really got
going with the scoreboard ticking over slowly, at around two runs per over and
when Broome, Shelford and Ralph departed after all making starts, combined with
Bright, Bates, Carter and Coutts all failing to trouble the scorers Wollaston
were in deep trouble. The innings finished in the 42nd over with a very
disappointing 79 on the board, with Rushden spinner Mudasser Hussain Ansari
claiming 6 for 21.
With confidence low after posting the low total, spirits were immediately lifted
when JJ Coutts bowled the Rushden opener off the first ball of the innings, and
when Perry claimed the other opener the following over, Wollaston started to
believe there may be a small chance of victory. But with only limited runs to
play with Rushden were determined to finish the game quickly and their middle
order played well to finish the game after only 15 overs, JJ Coutts claiming 2
for 29 and Perry 1 for 23.
In summary a disappointing day all round, with much improvement to be made for
the away trip to Horton next Saturday.

Andy Luck

John Pike 4 for 25 off 14 overs
Wollaston 2nds
travelled to ON's on a lovely sunny day for their second match.
Captain
Darren Laughton lost the toss and ON's decided to bat. The home team got off to
a great start and were 70 without loss. Jamie Perry opened the bowling with a
tight spell but unfortunately Josh Steggles injured himself early on which
meant that Kam Bahra had to come in to the attack .
Wollaston seemed
quite flat before Andy Luck took a catch above his head at mid off for
Wollaston's first wicket of the day and Kam's third wicket of the season. John
Pike took the next wicket after the batsman nicked it to wicket keeper Cameron
Pike .
Cam pike then
took another catch off the bowling of Jamie Perry . More wickets quickly fell
with three more for John pike and a run out by Marcus Shelton . Sam Drage took
his first wicket to reduce ON's to 135 for 8 with things looking good ex
Northampton Saints and England rugby player Paul Grayson started to hit out and
helped ON's to a challenging 183 all out Jamie Perry taking the last two wickets
. Wollaston's opening pair of Andy Luck and cam pike started off well until
unfortunately cam pike was run out to leave Wollaston 34 for 1 Andy luck was out
soon after a good diving catch by the ON's being taken. Charlie Elderton was
settling in and playing some nice strokes Sam Drage was then caught out and
Marcus Shelton didn't trouble the bowlers too long before he was back in the
pavilion. John Pike then got a quick fire 18 and was caught on the boundary
Charlie Elderton was then out for 29 . With the loss of that wicket ON's were in
to the Wollaston tail and unfortunately Wollaston were unable to reach the ON's
total or prevent them taking the wickets they needed to secure an ON's victory.
Wollaston ended up 138 all out ,it was a good bowling performance from Wollaston
and a much better batting performance than the previous week . So hopefully next
week will bring their first win.

With spirits high after a solid pre season, the 1st Xl got off to a
disappointing start with a 5 wicket defeat at the hands of Old Northamptonians.
After being asked to bat first Wollaston were only able to make 140 before they
were bowled out in the 51st over, with the main contributions coming from Steve
Muzgrave (30) and Liam Bates (28). Ex county player Rob White claiming 4 wickets
for the ON's with his leg spin.
White then continued his good day, going on to make 71 with the bat in quick
time, not helped by three dropped catches by the Wollaston lads. ON's crossed
the line comfortably in the 36th over, with Wollaston showing some spirit
towards the end claiming 5 wickets, with two a piece for Perry and Gibbs.
On a positive note both Patrick Bright and Harry Broome proved they are
developing into Premier standard cricketers, and new overseas signing Jameson
Coutts showed a lot of promise with the ball, bowling with good pace on a slow
wicket and is only going to get better.
Wollaston host Rushden at home next week, and will be looking to improve on a

On an
overcast Saturday afternoon Wollaston Seconds were competing with Kibworth 3rds
for the first time.
Wollaston
won the toss and opted to field first. In the second over a mix up between the
visiting opening batsmen gave Kieran Furniss the opportunity to run out one of
them out with a great throw to keeper Cameron Pike - thus becoming the first
wicket of the season for the Seconds. And just two overs later Charlie Elderton
matched Kieran's effort and emulated his colleague by whipping a smart
throw to Cameron for run out number two.
When the
opening attack of Kieran and Jamie Perry had a break, both Sam Drage and Kamran
Bahra (on debut), performed admirably with the former unable to break through,
but the new boy's pace being rewarded with his first Wollaston wicket.
Andy Kowal
bowled very economically and picked up a couple of wickets to keep Kibworth
under control and their 149 for 7 off fifty overs at tea time looked well within
Wollaston's capabilities.
The hosts
opted for experience in pursuit of an opening-day victory with Andy Luck and
Marcus Shelton putting on 28 for the first wicket before Marcus drove straight
into the grateful hands of mid-off. Sam Drage went the same way and four wickets
fell in rapid time to put Kibworth firmly in the ascendancy.
Despite
John Pike's dogged 20 there was no way out for Wollaston and they finally folded
to 93 all out in the thirty fourth over with six ducks in the scorebook.
Better
luck next week lads!

WOLLASTON v NORTHANTS ACADEMY Friendly -
Saturday 12th April
Although Wollaston finished ten runs short
with nine wickets down chasing Northants Academy's 183 all out, the end result
was not the prime focus for this friendly and it was agreed by all involved that
it was a resounding success.
The fifty-over per side game was played under blue
skies with a cool breeze and
provided a chance for the bowlers to get overs under their belts and the batsmen
to spend some time at the crease.
Noticeable performances came from Mark Ralph, Steve Musgrave, Harry Broome and
Patrick Bright with the bat, as well as Sam Drage, JJ Coutts and David Shelford
with the ball.

Scorecard
On a
dank, grey Saturday at Podington, Wollaston's hope of making it four wins on the
trot seemed to be evaporating with 15 overs of their innings remaining.
Both
openers had gone without troubling the scorers and despite a rallying 47 from
number five Kieran Furniss it was hard work for the visiting batting line up and
runs were at a premium.
At 94 for
9 a three figure score looked unlikely and an early tea threatened but sixteen
year old Sam Drage had other ideas. The number ten put together a potential
match winning stand of 59 with Adrian Ward that took Wollaston to a respectable
153 for 9 in 50 overs. Sam made a very cultured and unflappable 42 not out and
Adrian supported with a determined 15 not out and between them they took the
initiative away from the Bedfordshire side and and put Wollaston in the driving
seat.
After tea
Podington found batting even harder still. Opener Tom Chambers with 11 and
Kieran Fowler with 22 were the only batsmen to make double figures. But Jamie
Perry, bowling with pace accuracy and aggression accounted for both and went on
to take five more wickets to finish with remarkable figures of 7 for 31 off 9.1
overs. John Pike helped out with 2 for 7 off ten remarkably economical overs.
The bowlers were well supported
by the fielders with Cameron Pike catching three behind the stumps and Harry
Broome and Jamie Perry one each in the outfield.

With heavy rain falling earlier in the day
and showers forecast for early evening it was a matter of trying to get on top
and get through the overs as fast as possible to ensure that the game could be
completed and the points safely put to bed.
Geddington won the toss and surprisingly
decided to bat on a slow outfield and decent pitch.
Both Nathans' made and early breakthrough,
Dawson 2 for 19 off 8, and Healey 1 for 19 off 5 before Nick Dawson ( 4 for 1
off 4.1) and David Ward 3 for 22 off 8 worked through the rest of the batting
line up to leave the hosts 65 all out in 26 overs.
With tea still not at the ground it was
decided to play on until it arrived which suited Wollaston who had one eye on
the showers which were threatening to start anytime soon.
It took just 12 overs to reach the winning
target although 5 wickets were lost looking for quick runs. Tea was taken after
the game at which point it through it down.
Nathan Dawson made 38 not out after being

After being asked to bat first, Wollaston got
off to a slow but solid start, however when wickets started to fall the run
rate never really increased and despite the effort of Steve Musgrave (62), it
took some late hitting from Mark Carter (32) and Chris Perry (32) to get
Wollaston up to a respectable total.
In cold windy conditions, with the threat of
rain looming, Wollaston built early pressure with the ball with Brixworth 50-2
from the first 20 overs, Perry removing both openers. Musgrave picked up two
wickets in his 17 overs on the bounce, and when Mark Gibbs, brought back into
the attack for his second spell removed Berrill, 5 short of his half century,
things were looking good for Wollaston. However a couple of productive overs
for Brixworth brought them back into contention to set up a tight finish.
With 5 overs remaining the run rate was down
to around 6 an over, and some good batting from Paul Blakemore (47 n.o) was
enough to guide the tail home off the penultimate ball of the game. Pez
finishing with figures 17-4-57-4, Muz 17-1-59-2 and one wicket a piece for
Simon Driver and Gibbs.
A disappointing finish, in a came that seemed
to slip away late from Wollaston, when they seemed to be in the driving seat.
Five games to go, and a strong finish for the 1st Xl could see them push for a
top four finish.

AT HOME TO WICKEN 2nds
Wicken 148 for 9 in 45 overs
Wollaston 151 for 0 in 31 overs Won 29 points
Andrew Silsby 90 not out
Paul Carter 47 not out Nathan Dawson 4 for 17 in 13 overs
Scorecard
Wollaston and Wicken went
into this game with equal points - and in joint third place in division eleven,
knowing that a win would help the push for promotion whoever came out on top.
With a poor weather forecast
the toss seemed more relevant than usual although how to take best advantage of
it in the circumstances was still a conundrum. In the event Paul Jones lost the
toss and the visitors' opted for first knock.
Nathan Dawson was asked to
open the home attack and he did not let his skipper down. His first wicket came
in the form of an outstanding caught and bowled and for the rest of his spell he
was right on the money and finished with 4 for 17 off his maximum of 13 overs.
Nathan Healey backed him up at the other end and between them they kept our
rivals in check. Nick Dawson and David Ward weighed in with two wickets each and
Elliot Knight one.
With Wicken's innings
closing on 148 for 9 after 45 overs Wollaston were hoping that a good start was
on the cards - especially as veteran Paul Carter was opening along with chairman
Andrew Silsby. The two stalwarts did not disappoint and together they sailed
past the previous record partnership of 120, set against O.N's 5th in 2010 ( and
held by Silsby and Rex Boddington) to set a new ( unbeaten ) land mark of 151 -
made in just 31 overs of sheer class. The consensus of opinion was that it was
Mr Silsby's best innings with shots all around the wicket and he was well
supported by a great knock from Paul Carter who ran so well he made a mockery of
his Senior Citizen status.
It was a comprehensive win
and no doubt Wicken will be keyed up next Saturday for the return fixture in the
4 match series.

After being inserted on a

batting from Matthew Jones (53) and Olli Stone (67). A flurry of wickets around
the 40 over stage halted progress, and Wollaston had to settle for 227 in their
55 overs.
Mark Gibbs provided the early breakthrough, and Chris Perry was a constant
threat from his 17 overs off the bounce, however a century from Saints skipper
Chris Park, set up victory for his lower order to finish the game off, which
they duly obliged in the 52nd over 7 wickets down. Perry finishing with figures

FALL SHORT BY 21 RUNS AGAINST STONY STRATFORD
Stony Stratford 189 all out in
53.3 overs Wollaston 168 all out in 45.4 overs
Lost 7 points
Chris Perry 6 for 44 off
16.3 overs Scorecard
After
losing the toss, Wollaston put in another solid performance with the ball, in
hot testing conditions, and despite a couple of dropped catches en route,
finally dismissed Stony for 189 with an over to go. Chris Perry continued his
rich vein of form finishing with figures of 16.3-3-44-6, and he was well
supported by the efforts of Mark Gibbs 15-4-56-3 and Kieran Furniss 10-0-41-1,
who both can be proud of their efforts in that heat.
With Matthew Jones and Jimmy Hart back in the line up, Wollaston were confident
of chasing the target down, however the early removal of both openers meant
Wollaston had to re think their run chase effort. Hart and Oli Stone
complimented each other nicely and the pair managed to re-build the early set
backs to put Wollaston back on track. But when Hart was on the receiving end of
a dubious decision, and Mark Ralph, David Shelford, and Mark Carter all failed
to make an impact, the momentum once again swung in the favour of the
opposition.
In Stone, Wollaston always knew they had a match winner, and with the skipper
stroking a couple of nice boundaries at the other end Wollaston still pushed
hard for victory, however the dreaded run out of the skipper when he was on 33
and the dismissal of Stone 32 a couple of overs later gave Stony a sniff of
victory.
On his debut after a late call up Harry Broome absorbed some early pressure from
the Stony attack, and proved he has both the technique and temperament to be a
top quality player in the future, and despite the late efforts of Furniss and
Gibbo, Wollaston ran out of steam with Wollaston falling 22 short -
Broome finishing with 14 not out.

Wollaston 161 all out in 49.5
overs Horton House 162 for 9
51 overs Lost 11 points
Marcus Shelton 45
Chris Perry 3 for 28
Scorecard
A lack of
runs and the inability to bat their overs once again cost Wollaston victory, in
a game they were looking to pick up maximum points.
When Steve Musgrave crunched a cover drive to the boundary off the first ball of
the game I could sense a big total, however my optimism shot me in the foot, as
too many batsmen were guilty of throwing their wicket away.
Olly
Stone fell early after Muz had chopped one back onto his stumps two overs
before. Late call up Marcus Shelton (45) played with his usual freedom and along
with the in-form Mark Ralph (35) looked to have eradicated the early set backs,
however when both fell in quick succession and for once the middle order failed
to click after some good catching by Horton, it was left to Lewis Bates (33 not
out) to grind it out with the tail, and after a suicidal run out by Mark Gibbs
in the 50th over, Wollaston had to settle for 161, a less than average total.
Gibbs and Kieran Furniss both bowled well with the new ball making early inroads
into the Horton chase, and despite a good partnership between Andrew Morrison
and Akash Shah in the middle of the innings Wollaston always felt they had
enough in their locker to bowl the opposition out, particularly after David
Shelford had removed Shah LBW for 30 and Morrison was run out with some good
work again by Shelford an over later.
Some clean hitting by Andrew Neate appeared to have set up a comfortable victory
for Horton, however two wickets in two balls by skipper Chris Perry and a wicket
for Muz a couple of overs later made it a nail biting finish with Neate managing
to steer the opposition home under the pressure of the Wollaston attack.
Similar to the Oundle game, had we batted with more conviction at vital times
and used our full allotted overs, I'm sure victory would have been Wollaston's,
however we all know what they say about hindsight.....!

Scorecard
With opener
Andrew Silsby sent back to the pavilion second ball the Seconds were up against
it once again after a run of disappointing results. The revamped batting order
saw fellow opener Andy Luck joined at the wicket by fourteen year old Cameron
Pike - elevated from the depths of rabbit invested territory to the giddy
heights of number three. The confidence in Cameron was well placed and along
with Luck gave Wollaston a decent start before the latter was bowled for 25.
The
youngster remained unbeaten however and made his much deserved Wollaston NCL
maiden Fifty and was still there when the innings closed after 50 overs with 53*
to his name.. Unfortunately no one else could make an impression with most
of the Wollaston batting line up failing to reach double figures. Number five,
Nathan Dawson was expertly stumped for 16 after looking like he might go on to a
big score and number eight Jamie Perry was run out for 14.
Wollaston
put a big effort in after tea, but despite Jamie Perry grabbing a wicket
straight away and Adrian Ward following up with the other opener, numbers 3 and
4 were just too good on the day and Horton cruised home with 21 overs and eight
wickets to spare.

Scorecard
A fantastic hundred by Mark Ralph set up a
maximum point victory for Wollaston who remain tight on the heels of league
leaders Finedon.
Along with Liam Bates (61) the pair put on their second century partnership of
the season, in testing conditions on a wicket less than conducive to batting.
Ralph reached his century in the 53rd over including 12 fours and 1 six allowing
the skipper to declare early setting the opposition 228 to win. Other
contributions cam from Muz (21) at the start of the innings and Shelford (23) at
the end.
The Wollaston opening bowlers then tore into the W'boro top order who were
helpless on a wicket made for Gibbs whose bounce and movement offered 5 catches
within the slip cordon well supported by Furniss who claimed two wickets at the
other end. Perry and Muz mopped up the tail with conviction, with only James
Howes (60 n.o) offering any resistance for the opposition.

Wollaston travelled to
Little Harrowden to take on Wellingborough 4ths who were propping up division
11.
Paul Jones won the
toss, decided to bat and sent in seasoned openers Andrew Silsby and Rex
Boddington who between then amassed an impressive 115 for the first wicket.
Silsby made 54 and Boddington 38 before they made way for Nathan Dawson and Sam
Drage.
Dawson in particular
showed no mercy on the young home attack and his unbeaten century contained 7
sixes and came in 23 overs - strongly supported by Drage who made his maiden
half century and remained not out at the close of the innings.
The youngsters from
Wellingborough made a plucky reply and although never looking like making a
winning total they battled hard and made Wollaston work for the win.
Sam Drage bowled his

Unbeaten run comes to an end for 1st
Xl
A lack of runs caused Wollaston to
register their first loss of the season and ended a 15 week trot of
unbeaten matches.
After losing the toss Wollaston
were asked to bat on a flat deck and knew they would have to post a
big score if they were to win the game. Oundle overseas pace man
Petrus Jeftha, removed Matt Jones in his second over and followed it
up in his next over with the wicket of Mark Ralph promoted to number 3
in the absence of Jimmy Hart. Liam Bates was unlucky after digging out
a yorker only for the ball to roll back onto the stumps, and when
David Shelford was caught soon after, Wollaston were staring down the
barrel.
Mark Carter joined Steve Musgrave at the crease, knowing the pair
would have to get some form of partnership going to re build the
innings. Muz coped well with the pace of Jeftha, and was scoring
freely, whilst Carts latched onto some loose bowling from the other
end, clearing the ropes twice in one over off the bowling of Daniel
Oldham. Having done the hard work and seeing off the dangerous Jeftha,
Muz unfortunately relaxed a little too much and offered a catch off
the bowling of Richard Cunningham, and was dismissed for 46. Marcus
Shelton failed to make an impact, and like Muz after doing the hard
work, Carts managed to pick out the only man on the boundary a couple
of overs later and was out for 41.
The Oundle skipper could smell an opportunity and brought Jeftha back
into the attack, but Charlie Elderton and the skipper dug their heels
in and managed to keep the scoreboard ticking, and it was the spin at
the other end which eventually did the damage. Elderton showed promise
but was caught and bowled off Ramsden for 18, and despite a gentle wag
of the tail, the Wollaston skipper Chris Perry was left stranded
on 30 not out after Oundle wrapped up the innings in the 47th over.
Despite Keiran Furniss making the early breakthrough with a delivery
that swung back late clipping the top of off stump to the left handed
opener, and Mark Gibbs managing to find the edge of the Oundle number
3 - duly accepted by Carts, too many loose deliveries from the seamers
meant the skipper had to turn to spin early. However, this had the
desired effect with Perry striking early with an LBW to remove Tom
Bishop.
This brought Jeftha to the crease who
proved he is a talented all rounder and did not hold back on taking
the attack to Wollaston. A run out by a scrambling Carts threw a
spanner into the works, however this did not seem to phase Jeftha, who
hit 9 fours and 3 sixes on his way to 85 before Perry removed him
caught behind by Carts. A couple more wickets fell again off the
bowling of Perry which certainly made it a nervous finish for the
Oundle boys. However it was too little too late as Oundle
finished the game off 8 down in the 39th over. Another 30 runs for
Wollaston certainly would have made things interesting!
Congratulations to Chris Perry who picked up another 5 wicket haul for
the Wollaston cause. Wollaston will be looking to get back to a
winning mentality next week with an away trip to Wellingborough Town.

On a day that looked far from settled on
the weather front, Wollaston lost the toss and were inserted with the grey
and forbidding skies skulking overhead at Emberton.
Progress was slow with the home
openers struggling to make any real impression on the Geddington attack.
However, an opening stand of over forty was compiled between Andrew Silsby ( 18)
and Rex Boddington (23) which gave a foundation for number three Nathan Dawson
to build on.
Initial circumspection was gradually
replaced with savage hitting and his 68 runs changed the course of the innings
and set up the five final overs for Craig Boddington to club four sixes and make
a quick-fire 41 not out. Young Lewis North-Row pitched in with 13.
In reply Geddington were soon one down when
David Ward ( 3 for 20 off 10 ) induced Geddington skipper Mark Thomas to leave
his crease and lighting work by keeper Silsby saw him stumped with only 4 on the
board.
Fellow opener, Thomas Pearson (bowled) and
number three Ross Campbell (caught Graham Richards) were also sent back by the
same bowler to put the visitors in deep trouble.
Nick Dawson ( 3 for 36 off 10) and Nathan
Healey (3 for 26 off 10) worked their way through the middle order before
Lewis North-Row made his bowling debut and wrapped up the innings when he had
last man Harry Bolton well caught by Craig Boddington in the covers.

The 1st Xl picked up their sixth victory of
the season, and claimed maximum points against a young Burton Latimer side.
Losing the toss Wollaston were asked to have first use on what appeared green
but turned out to be a good wicket. Wollaston quickly reached 40 without loss
from the first 10 overs, Steve Musgrave reaching the boundary five times
before being removed LBW for 26. Matt Jones and Jimmy Hart fell quickly
afterwards and it was down to Mark Ralph and Liam Bates to re build the
innings.
The pair put together a partnership of 125
with a combination of well struck boundaries and good running between the
wickets, and despite a short rain delay both players continued the momentum to
reach their half centuries to put Wollaston into a good enough position to be
able to declare early. Batesy finishing with 67 and Ralphy 64, with a cameo
performance from David Shelford at the end of the innings, finishing with 24
n.o from 19 balls, and the skipper called the boys in after 51 overs.
Playing against his old club, the skipper
handed Shelford the new ball and operated with Gibbs at the other end, and
despite leaking a couple of early boundaries, Shelford rewarded his skipper by
bowling Daniel Bird for 5. Following his trot of good form Muz was introduced
into the attack, and was shortly joined by the skipper. Musgrave dismissed all
three potential match winners for Burton with Morton caught on the deep square
boundary by Jones, bowling Luke Odell, and claiming Scott Sanders caught at
slip with a fantastic reaction catch by Bates.
Despite the efforts of George Groenland (33),
the experience and guile of Muz was too much for the opposition and he
finished with figures of 17-4-52-6. Shelford replaced the skipper who had
claimed one wicket at the pavilion end, and wrapped up proceedings with a
sharp catch by Ralph at short leg and an absolute screamer by Bates diving one
handed at second slip in the 45th over to round off a good day for both
himself and Shelford, who must have taken great pleasure in the victory.
This sixth win of the season allows us to
maintain our second place position in the league, and we will be looking to
continue this winning momentum with the visit of Oundle Town next Saturday.
Bring it on.....!
Please remember Wollaston play the Saints at

With Louis North-Row and Sam
Bayes making their Wollaston senior league debuts Paul Jones's troops were
hoping to get back to winning ways at Kettering.
With runs proving hard
to come by, the batsmen struggled against a good bowling attack and only number
three Nathan Dawson made any real impression on a decent pitch that kept low on
occasions. He battled hard for his 29 and it pushed the Wollaston to a solitary
batting point. In the context of the game Nathan Richards' 10 and Louis's eleven
were also vital, and gave us a slight chance at tea time.
To win the the game
Wollaston knew that it needed at least one bowler to bowl exceedingly well - and
seamer Josh Steggles was that man! He took the new ball and proceeded to take
three wickets to plunge the hosts to a precarious 3 for 27.
David Ward Ward then
had Daniels trapped in front before Steggles grabbed another to keep Wollaston
on top.
With the aid of fine
catching from Andrew Silsby and skipper Jones, Ward took 2 more wickets
before a couple of run-outs put the batting side in dire straits.
With number six, Bains
batting trying hard to shepherd the tail, Nick Dawson finished off a good day

Wollaston sneak home in
eventful finish!
There were run outs, dropped
catches, catches on the boundary and plenty of drama as Wollaston took it down
to the penultimate ball of the match to claim their 5th victory of the season!
After asking the home team to bat Wollaston put in another very good
bowling/fielding performance at what is normally a very batsmen friendly ground.
Once again Steve Musgrave & Chris Perry did the damage, whilst earlier both
Simon Driver and Kieran Furniss had picked up early wickets to get Wollaston off
too a good start. Liam Bates picked up the important wicket of Andrew Reynoldson
in the middle of the Rushton innings, and showed his bowling is continuing to
develop, and it was left to Muz & Pez to mop up the tail, Pez finishing with
outstanding figures of 13-6-10-4 and Muz 16-3-58-3.
Muz could not continue his good day getting bowled off the third ball of the
Wollaston innings after an innocuous delivery sharply jagged back hitting his
leg stump. Jimmy Hart who has had a dry couple of weeks by his standard came to
the crease with confidence and took the attack to the Rushton bowlers, whilst
Matthew Jones steadied the ship at the other end. Hart quickly hit 3 fours and a
huge six, however frustratingly skied a catch after he looked set for a big
score.
Mark Ralph - confident after his Kiwi experience failed to get going after a
dubious bump-ball decision was given against him, and Jones soon followed after
hitting a well timed sweep shot straight at a fielder. Charlie Elderton making
his 1st Xl debut unfortunately failed to trouble the scorers, and when Liam
Bates fell an over later after playing himself in, the guys down the order who
had not had much time at the crease would have to dig deep to get Wollaston
home.
After getting dropped early in his innings Carter & skipper Pez soon found some
confidence, and the chirpy Rushton players soon quietened down as the pair built
a solid partnership of 75, and Wollaston were cruising to victory. However Perry
was bowled on 33 and when Carter was run out two overs later for 31 was it
possible that there was going to be a final twist in the game....?
Still needing 10 runs with plenty of balls in hand Wollaston were still
confident with the experience of Driver and Gibbs at the crease, especially
after Driver stroked a cover drive to the boundary. However, after already being
dropped on the boundary Gibbs attempted another big shot only to be caught on
the ropes. Two to win and some very nervous players on the side lines! Driver
managed to sneak a single to tie the game, and it came down to the last over
where Furniss patiently waited for his opportunity and smashed the ball to the
boundary, much to the delight of the Wollaston players.
We did not make it easy for ourselves but certainly showed what can only be
described as 'Big B*ll+!?s' to claim a memorable victory, over a team we love to
beat!

Saturday 8th June 2013 is a day that will
live long in the memory of those players and spectators fortunate enough to
spend it at Wollaston playing fields. That was the day that 14 year old Patrick
Bright cut, pulled, drove and ramped his way to the youngest senior hundred in
the club's long history. The number of runs he scored and the way in which he
scored them were both equally impressive particularly as Wollaston were 37 for 3
when his innings began.
Darren Laughton had won the toss and
elected to bat first and with Patrick he put Wollaston firmly in control, taking
the score to 120 for 4 after 23 overs. Darren's departure made way for John Pike
who made 85 from just 53 balls allowing the captain to declare after 46 overs
having set Podington a target of 277 to win.
When Andy Kowal took the new ball and removed both of Podington's opening
batsmen very quickly, a home win looked the most likely result. Unfortunately it
wasn't to be despite Andy's final figures of 5 for 42 from 15 overs. Liam
Souster made a resilient 53 before Ian Hart and, former Wollaston player, Adam
Tee counter attacked well scoring 42 and 81 respectively. The innings finished
on 237 for 7 with neither side able to force a result but it was enough to push
Wollaston back to the top of the table.

After last week's emphatic victory at Wicken
the Thirds were in confident mood half way through this return fixture- and even
more so after just three overs after tea with the visitors three wickets down
with just one run to their name.
But cricket has a way of biting back when
you least expect it. And Wollaston certainly had the teeth marks to prove it at
7.30pm on Saturday night!
All was going well before the break. Opener
Andy Silsby was in confident mood hitting the third ball of the match for six
and went on to make a well deserved 53 before unluckily giving a return
catch to the bowler. The middle order came and went without adding much to the
proceedings and it was left to Nick Dawson with 46, Sam Drage (26) and Elliot
Knight (24) to take the score to over 200 and maximum batting points.
With the Boddington (junior) tea seemingly
giving the bowlers added power, Nathan Healey quickly grabbed a couple of wicket
followed by another from Josh Steggles. But whether it was the minted pineapple
dessert wearing off or just poor cricket, the fielding was tired and
the bowling ineffective - resulting in a complete turn around of fortunes.
Number three, Giacome Palmiero went on
to score an unbeaten 123 and number six Callum Wright a well constructed
53 to take Wicken to a well deserved victory and inflict the first defeat of the
season on a chastened and subdued Wollaston Third Team

A fantastic Matt Jones century put Brixworth
to the sword in an emphatic 10 wicket victory for the 1st Xl.
After losing the toss Wollaston found themselves bowling first again, a
decision the Brixworth skipper may live to regret, after their batsmen struggled
under the scrutiny of some good Wollaston bowling. Both opening bowlers found
some early swing and bowled in good areas, with Simon Driver making the break
through in the 3rd over removing Paul Blakemore who played onto his stumps.
On a slow wicket Wollaston introduced spin early whilst Driver continued to
build pressure from the other end and picked up his second wicket in his 9th
over caught by Shelford at mid off. Chris Perry found some purchase in the deck
straight away and was consistently beating the bat with turn and bounce and with
his partner in crime Steve Musgrave who replaced Driver after a good opening
spell, made life very difficult for Brixworth.
Some good catching in close by both Liam Bates and Mark Ralph quickly reduced
Brixworth to five down, and despites the efforts of Callum Berrill 29, Fred
Newborough 19 and Sam Sweeney 21, Brixworth had little answers to the spin
twins. Bates wrapped up the innings in the 52nd over to round off another
excellent bowling performance with Perry finishing with figures of 17-6-27-4,
Muz 15-6-55-3, well supported earlier by Driver 11-4-30-2 and Kieran Furniss
7-3-12-0.
Although Wollaston had, had some success already this season chasing low totals
on a spinning deck things were never going to be easy, and getting the innings
off to a good start to lower the morale of the Brixworth players was vital. This
is exactly what Matt Jones and Musgrave did with Jones on this occasion taking
on the role of the aggressor and Muz playing the supporting role. Jones played
with confidence and freedom in one of the best knocks I have seen him play, and
with Brixworth heads down the pair really dominated the Brixworth bowling
attack.
Jones's century came off 107 balls including 16 fours and a maximum to finish
the game in style in the 30th over, with Muz 25 not out at the other end, to
wrap up an emphatic 10 wicket victory and sees Wollaston move up to 4th in the
league.

Raunds Town were sitting at the foot of the
division 3 table when Wollaston visited on Saturday so anything less than a win
would have been a disappointment for Darren Laughton's men.
Having been asked to bat first, all of the batsmen contributed whilst never
letting the home bowlers settle. Pat Bright played the stand out innings the
game in making 54 very fluent runs whilst being well supported by Marcus Shelton
(30), John Pike (36) and Andy Koval (38). An imposing target of 237 had been set
and it was over to the bowlers to complete the job.
Although Raunds made a reasonable start to their run chase it wasn't long before
Jaime Perry made the breakthrough by clean bowling Adam Lack. Wickets then fell
at regular intervals, particularly following the introduction of John Pike into
the attack who took 5 wickets for just 12 runs. He was supported by Adrian Ward
(3 for 27) and the game was wrapped up in the 41st over when the last wicket
fell still 118 runs short of the target.
It was a very comprehensive win on a day that saw all 3 Wollaston sides show
their quality and sweep aside the opposition.

Wollaston's decision to bat
first after winning the toss at Wicken didn't reap instant rewards.
Opener Andrew Silsby
departed for nine with just 16 on the board and it was a matter of consolidation
when number three Paul Jones joined Rex Boddington at the crease. They did a
reasonable job of soaking up what the hosts' attack could offer until, with the
total on 78 both contrived to leave the scene of the action. The former with 32
and the latter with 27.
Five and six - Scott Bailey
and Craig Boddington both went cheaply to put Wollaston in a tricky position.
However, father and son Nick and Nathan Dawson batted sensibly with great
running between the wickets and strong hitting, and together they put on 54 for
the sixth wicket. Nathan was finally caught and bowled for 41 and Nick was
bowled for 15.
Number nine Sam Drage made a
useful 13 not out and the innings closed on 158 in the 44th over.
The reply from Wicken
got of to a positive start with Kevin Worfold and Matt Pitcher (35) putting on
38 for the first wicket, and later at 60 for one the home club looked in a good
position. However, with the first three wickets falling to Nick Dawson 60 for 1
was reduced to 80 for 9 thanks to one more wicket from Dawson, three from David
Ward, two from Nathan Healey and one from Josh Steggles. The innings was wrapped
up on 95 in the 43rd over.
Nick Dawson 4 for 19

A nail biting finish!
Mark Carter and Kieran Furniss were
forced to play out the last 24 balls of the game to earn Wollaston a
draw at league leaders Finedon, to make it 9 games without defeat for
the 1st Xl.
Again bowling first, Wollaston did not have it all their own way, with
ex Wollaston and County player Ben Howgego racking up a well made
century, and Finedon captain Andy Daniels adding a quick fire fifty to
put Finedon into a strong position. Once again Pez and Muz did the
damage for Wollaston, with Simon Driver earlier picking up his fist
wicket of the season and Shelford with the other wicket bowling Greg
Evans with a top notch delivery. Perry picking up a consecutive 5
wicket haul with figures of 17-2-66-5 well supported by Muz who
produced 12-1-68-2.
With a seam quartet of genuine pedigree, going at around 5 runs per
over from the start was never going to be easy, however, openers Muz &
Razzle took on the challenge and soon reached their 50 partnership
with things looking good for Wollaston. Jones fell for 40 under
unfortunate circumstances after the ball ricocheting off both bat and
pad before knocking the bails off, and when Jimmy Hart fell the next
over and Muz shortly after passing his fifty the game swung back into
Finedon's favour.
Last seasons 'Duck Twins' Mark Ralph & Liam Bates kept the scoreboard
moving, with Ralphy continuing his rich vein of form, and Batesy
showing signs that he is getting back towards the quality player he
is, but similar to last week, the run rate continued to creep up and
soon the target of reaching 225 for the extra batting point became
more realistic than winning the game, but Finedon had other ideas....
Both Ralph & Bates were both stumped looking to kick on against the
Finedon spinners, and when 14 year old Patrick Bright - a talent I'm
sure we'll hear a lot more about in the future, making his 1st Xl
maiden innings and David Shelford both fell cheaply, the target of 225
seemed a long way off. Perry was unable to continue his good day,
suffering from the dreaded 'first baller' and survival was now the key
for Wollaston.
Things went from bad to worse for Wollaston when Driver was caught
trapped in front two overs later and Wollaston had four overs to play
out with both the Finedon bowlers and supporters' tails up! But Carter
and Furniss held their nerve, and despite a couple of desperate LBW
shouts, earned Wollaston a draw with Furniss showing good maturity,
confidently defending the last six balls from Will Sneath.
Despite slipping a couple of league
places, it was a good fight from Wollaston, who picked up some vital
points. Wollaston entertain Brixworth next week, a team they have had
mixed fortunes against in the past, and will no doubt be in for
another tough battle.

After last week's low
scoring win at Great Houghton, the Seconds went into this top of the table clash
hoping to maintain the winning run which had put them in such a good position in
division three.
In the absence of
skipper Darren Laughton, his vice captain Andy Luck took the helm and decided to
bowl first when the coin came down in his favour.
An early breakthrough
was the ideal start when Jamie Perry induced a fine edge off the bat of opener
Marcus Broome and the eager gloves of Cameron Pike were more than ready to
accept the catch. Wollaston's fielding was
tight and well organised and although fellow opener Tom Goodman and number three
Ashley Starmer gradually built a solid base with a stand of 89, Wollaston still
maintained a degree of control.
However, Goodman
gradually increased the tempo and although wickets fell at the other end, he
went on to strike 6 sixes and 6 fours in a fine knock of 112. He was finally
clean bowled by last week's man of the match, Dave Mercer.
With Kyle Smith's
middle order 38, St.CR closed their innings on 231 for nine after 50 overs.
David Mercer 3 for 52
Jamie Perry 3 for 62
In reply, opener Marcus Shelton's battled
hard and his 33 proved to be the top score for Wollaston against an accurate
seam attack. Perry with 15 had the next highest run tally and despite a defiant
unbeaten ten not out from skipper Luck Wollaston folded to 94 all out in
the 42nd over.

Wollaston skipper Paul Jones
won the toss and decided to bat on a soft, slow pitch at Emberton. Openers
Andrew Silsby (11) and Rex Boddington (17) got the home side off to an adequate
- but not scintillating - start, which in the conditions was worth more than
initially appreciated.
Following the demise
of the two openers the middle order all added "bits and pieces" but it was
number eight Joshua Steggles who took the score up to an acceptable level when
he made 26 in quick time before getting run out. Sam Drage ( 9 not out) and
Nathan Healey (15 not out) carried on the good work for the tenth wicket to give
Wollaston a fighting chance.
After a wonderful tea,
the home side bowlers really did the business. With fine catches - including a
breathtaking effort by debutant David Pike, Higham capitulated to 63 all out in
the 37th over to give Wollaston a much deserved victory.

First Xl fight hard but have to settle for draw.
With a couple of O.N's 1st team regulars absent
Wollaston fancied their chances of making it four straight victories in a row,
but came up short in an exciting run chase.
Pez's magic coin let him down on this occasion however O.N's skipper chose to
bat anyway to the captain's delight. Once again Wollaston made the early break
through, with Olly Stone removing the O.N's opener in his first over caught in
the gulley by Muz. Tom Webb and Zaakir Khawaja soon found their feet and latched
on to some loose Wollaston bowling, with Webb reaching his 50 first at around a
run a ball, with Khawaja not far behind.
Perry broke the partnership removing Webb LBW attempting a sweep shot. Shelford
provided vital support in his second spell in the middle of the O.N's innings
picking up two wickets, however the O.N's players continued to attack on what
appeared to be a fairly flat deck. Perry was made to work hard, but was rewarded
with his first 5 wicket haul of the season, finishing with figures of 17-1-75-5,
but with some good hitting towards the end of their innings by Tom Hafil, the
O.N's finished on 277, a total Wollaston were disappointed in considering how
well we have bowled and fielded the last couple of weeks.
Chasing 277 was always going to be a big ask, and would show where Wollaston's
batting was really at, considering the low totals we have had to chase the first
three games of the season, however on a flat deck and a number of the top in
order in form it certainly wasn't out of reach. Musgrave wanted to get Wollaston
off to a good start and clearly had attack on his mind however one shot too many
was once again his downfall, and when Jimmy Hart was given out first ball a
decision that certainly would have been referred on the DRS!, Wollaston were
facing an uphill battle.
The attacking style of Ralph and solidarity of Jones combined well forming a
vital partnership after the early disappointments. Some tight O.N's bowling with
the field spread in the middle of the innings saw the run rate soon creeping up
to around 7 an over and when Jones was dismissed for 63 it appeared the game was
heading towards a draw, however the introduction of Stone injected some spice to
the innings and when he was joined by Batesy after Ralphy was run out for a well
made 70, the initial target of reaching 225 was scraped as Wollaston pushed for
victory.
A combination of some big hitting and good running between the wickets gave
Wollaston a glimmer of hope, to a point that at one stage all 9 O.N's fielders
were on the boundary! Unfortunately when Stone holed out on the boundary for 58,
Wollaston ran out of deliveries eventually finishing the innings on 265 with a
very tired Batesy 37 not out.
Considering the game looked dead at one point this made for an exciting finish,
and proved Wollaston had got rid of a couple of the demons they found during the
batting last season, and the skipper was pleased with the efforts of the boys.
Wollaston travel to league leaders Finedon next week for another tough
encounter.

The 2nd XI travelled to Great Houghton and
were greeted by a long outfield covered in cut grass and a very soft wicket that
looked as though run scoring was going to be difficult. That certainly proved to
be the case after Darren Laughton had won the toss and asked the home side to
bat first.
John Pike and Andy Luck both bowled very economically through their full
allocation of overs with John picking up 4 for 21. Adrian Ward and David Mercer
continued to tighten the grip on the frustrated Houghton batsmen before David
(almost apologetically) took 6 wickets for just 7 runs and the innings closed
with 84 as the target set.
Wollaston's batsmen also found the pitch difficult but Harry Broome and David
Mercer played very nicely to move the score close to the victory target. Despite
a late flurry of wickets it was quite a comfortable chase and a third win in a

Skipper Paul Jones won the
toss and batted on a decent pitch at Dean and had to overcome an uncertain

overs later fellow opener Rex Boddington was bowled by Ollie Warwick for nought.
Jones and James then
studiously took the score to thirty before the former was bowled to give Warwick
his second "veteran" scalp of the game. James went on to make a classy 24 before
Nathan Dawson (32) and Scott Bailey (21) started to put together a decent total.
Number six Craig Boddington
(44) came to the crease and with a balanced innings of quick singles, savage
blows and cultured drives took the score to a healthy 178 for 8 off 45 overs,

In reply Rushden looked
looked they meant business but when Nathan Healey cleaned bowled skipper Tony
Clampin it put Wollaston in charge. However, number three Olly Warwick looked

Looking to make
amends for last seasons 30 all out effort away at Peterborough, the 1st
Xl responded with an emphatic 7 wicket victory over the 2012 champions.
Continuing the trend by winning the toss and inserting the opposition
was the way forward. After begging the skipper to take the new ball,
Mark Gibbs was keen to start where he left off last week and again made
the important break through removing the dangerous Asim Butt in the
third over. Fit again Olly Stone operated from the other end and after a
close LBW shout was turned down off his first delivery of the match it
was not long before he joined Gibbs in the wickets column, bowling both P'boro
captain Lewis Bruce and number four Callum French in quick succession,
15 for 3 in the first 6 overs was the perfect start.
After his ankle had loosened up Stone cranked up the mph and proved why
the skipper was so desperate to sign him during the winter. The brave
Matt Jones hung onto a good catch after he'd finished hiding behind
Batesy in the slips for Stones third wicket, and Stone could not be kept
out of the game with a direct hit run-out a couple of overs later. Muz
replaced Gibbs and was immediately in the action after Paul McMahon
played one back onto his stumps, 6 down but still a lot of work to do.
Shelford replaced
Stone after he had completed his mandatory 7 overs, and soon found his
stride bowling with good movement and control and once again showed he
will provide quality back up to Muz and Pez in the middle of the
innings. After a couple of chances were put down off his bowling (no
names mentioned!) Shelford bottled his frustrations and showed good
character by bouncing back with two quick wickets both caught behind by
Carts, to put Wollaston into a real strong position.
Wollaston knew they
had to wrap the Posh innings up quickly and the skipper immediately
turned to danger man Stone, who duly replied bowling Joe Dawborn, and
after an interesting run out situation decision was correctly given not
out by the umpires, Stone finished the host's innings in the 34th over
shattering the stumps of Ajaz Akhtar which is always a pleasant site to
the Wollaston boys.
113 all out and
once again a fantastic effort with Stone finishing with figures of
9.2-0-47-5, well supported by Gibbs 9-2-29-1, Muz 8-2-17-1 and Shelford
7-2-18-2.
Like last week,
Wollaston knew the chase would not be easy, and after both openers were
removed and a couple of heavy rain breaks, the fielding side began to
squeeze the pressure on the Wollaston effort. Big Jimmy Hart was only
ever going to play one way and he soon took the attack to Peterborough
in true fashion. Mark Ralph desperate for a score also made a positive
start and the pair forged a vital partnership in testing conditions that
set up victory for Wollaston. After Hart was dismissed for 29, Ralph
continued at his fluent best that we hope to see for the rest of the
season and along with Stone the pair saw Wollaston home in style, Ralph
finishing 43 not out and Stone completing a fantastic all round
performance with 24 not out, to round off an emphatic victory, and
hopefully prove that village boys can play cricket!

An inspired bowling display from Mark Gibbs
saw the first team claim their first ever victory over the Northampton Saints,
to make it back to back wins from the first two games of the season.
After a good bowling display last week, Chris Perry once again asked the
opposition to bat first. Wollaston got off to the best possible start removing
the consistently reliable Alec Swann caught at point by Mark Ralph, and the
Saints number 3 Joe Collins with an absolute Jaffa, in the first over both off
the bowling of Gibbs. Gibbs then struck in quick succession again with a loose
pull shot from Dan Harris caught by 3 from 3 catches Jimmy Hart at mid off, and
Tom Bradbeer was bowled by a ball the swung in late just clipping the off stump,
4 down with very little on the board, unbelievable scenes!
Jake Higginbotham and Mark Wolstenholme fought hard to repair the early damage
and started to build a partnership, with Perry replacing Driver, and after a
couple of close LBW shouts were turned down Wollaston knew they still had a lot
of hard work to do with two good players at the crease and quality still to come
in. Shelford replaced Gibbs after the big fella ran out of oxygen! and was
unlucky not to pick up a wicket after Higginbotham slashed at a wide one and the
primordial figure of Mark Ralph couldn't quite leap high enough at Point to
claim the catch.
Steve Musgrave replaced Shelford after leaking a couple of boundaries, whilst
Perry toiled away at the other end without success. With his usual variation
Musgrave got one to lift and Higginbotham attempting a cut shot was well caught
at slip by 2 from 4 catches Liam Bates! A steady downpour caused the players to
leave the field and the Wollaston boys got the covers onto the wicket with slick
military precision that the grounds staff at Lords would be proud of...Not!!!
When play resumed and 4 overs had been lost from the match, Gibbs was
re-introduced into the attack and continued where he left off from his first
spell, consistently getting the ball to move and had Jack Johnson caught behind
with a regulation catch for Carts, and pulled out another beauty to remove
Wolstenholme with a yorker after he had just passed 50. Musgrave continued to
cause problems removing the Saints overseas player with an ambitious sweep shot
considering the amount of time he had spent at the crease, however with Chris
Park still at the crease Saints were always capable of posting a respectable
total. Gibbs had other ideas and claimed his seventh wicket after Richard Ashton
chopped one back onto his stumps, and Muz wrapped up the innings with a sharp
stumping by Carts to remove Park.
Gibbs finished with figures of 14-2-35-7 doubling his wicket tally for the club!
and Musgrave 9.3-2-30-3, another great effort with the ball.
Although confidence was high Wollaston were under no illusions that the run
chase would be easy, but made a positive start taking 8 runs from the first
over. Jones unfortunately failed to make an impact again playing around a full
delivery from Wolstenholme, which brought the inform Jimmy Hart to the crease,
who along with Musgrave both played very positively, with Hart intent on
sticking anything in his half back over the bowlers head! Wollaston soon reached
100 with only one wicket down and with Hart striking two sixes and a four in
succession off the Saints overseas spinner, things were looking good. Musgrave
reached his 50 including 8 fours and 1 six, to complete a good alround day for
him. Jimmy was denied another 50 after a dubious caught and bowled shout went
against him, and despite loosing Mark Ralph before the end, Musgrave wrapped up
proceedings in the 32nd over although he was nearly run out whilst shaking hands
with the opposition after thinking the ball had crossed the boundary! Get to the
gym Muzzy!
Wollaston travel to Champions Peterborough next week and will be hopeful of a
repeat performance!

Match report
After losing the toss and eight overs to
rain, Harry Broome and Marcus Shelton eventually opened up for Wollaston and dug
in against a accurate home attack.
Just as the opening stand was promising
bigger things Broome was caught by Mark Laurenson off the bowling of James
Burrows at which time Shelton was joined by number three Charlie Elderton.
However, the opener was dismissed six short of his half century with Elderton
making 19, Andy Kowal 18 and Andy Luck 19.
Skipper Darren Laughton added impetus and
his 34 took Wollaston to a reasonable total of 149 all out in 43.4 overs.
In reply the Wollaston attack were in great
form. With early wickets leaving the hosts on 6 for 3, the visitors were
immediately on top and maintained that position for the remainder of the game
thanks to a top display of bowling from the four seamers. Jamie Perry (1 for 34
off 15) took the first wicket in the opening over, Kieran Furniss followed up
with a strike in the second and finished with 3 for 10 in 12 overs including the
vital match winner in the 46th. John Pike (3 for 10 off 8 ) and Andy Koval (3
for 16 off 9) kept the pressure on - helped by keen fielding and catching.
It was a well deserved win highlighted by a
great display of seam bowling.

FIRST ELEVEN GET A WINNING
START AGAINST STONY STRATFORD
Stony Stratford 132 for 8
Wollaston 136 for 6 Won 22 points
Scorecard
After a delayed start which
reduced the game to 50 overs per side, Chris Perry won the toss and asked Stony
Stratford to bat on a typically flat Campbell Park wicket.
Mark Gibbs and Simon Driver were handed the new ball and the 2013 season was
underway. Driver bowled economically only conceding 9 runs in his 10 over spell
and created pressure from one end, and despite conceding a couple of boundaries
Gibbs was consistently beating the bat with good seam movement and was rewarded
for his efforts in his 8th over removing the Stony opener caught by new
Countyman Olly Stone in the gulley.
New signing David Shelford was also keen to make his mark on the team replacing
Gibbs, and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his first over after the
reliable hands of Chris Perry spilled a chance at first slip (we'll blame it on
the cold weather Pez!!!). Once Shelford had settled and found his lenght he was
also generating good movement and in his 3rd over forced the Stony batsmen to
chop one back onto the stumps, registering his first of what we hope will be
many wickets for the club.
Perry replaced Driver and immediately found a rhythm like he had been bowling
all winter, removing the Stony number 3 trapped in front LBW sweeping, and the
number 4 caught behind by Carter, in quick succession. Musgrave replaced
Shelford at the other end and the pair tightened the pressure on the Stony
middle order, who had little answers after the pace was taken off the ball, with
the pair bowling through until the end of the innings.
Musgrave finished with two wickets, and Perry four wickets, with the ever
sprightly Jimmy Hart taking two catches in the outfield, and Stony finishing on
132 for 8 in their 50 overs. Despite a couple of dropped catches a good
performance by all the lads who showed a good attitude in the field, for the
first outing of the season.
After carb loading at tea with the excellent Pasta dishes and Simon Driver had
eaten the biggest portion of Apple Pie I've ever seen! Wollaston went out to bat
confident of knocking off the runs on a good flat pitch. Musgrave didn't get off
to the start he wanted offering an easy catch at mid on and despite weathering
some early new ball pressure Matt Jones also failed to make an impact and was
removed LBW off the bowling of Steve Bellew.
Jimmy Hart continued from where he left off last season, batting with
determination and maturity and was keen to latch onto anything loose with his
natural aggressive style. Ralph and exciting prospect Stone both fell cheaply,
however both showed signs of their undoubted talent which I'm sure we will hear
more about this season. Another rain break meant Wollaston lost 6 overs from
their innings and after Bates was caught at slip shortly after play resumed, the
nerves started in the dressing room. Shelford got off to the best start possible
crunching a boundary through the off side on his first delivery, and continued
in this manner latching onto some short pitched bowling with two pull shots to
the leg side boundary.
When Hart was dismissed for 60, Wollaston were
in the driving seat and it was left to Shelford and Carter to steer the ship
home, with Shelford hitting the winning runs with a lofted drive boundary to
finish the game in style, finishing 26 not out.
An excellent start for Chris Perry's 1st Xl with a good alround team effort.

Darren Laughton 47 John Pike 45 Patrick
Bright 32 Adrian Ward 3 for 36 off 7 0vers
The 2nd II began the season at home to West
Haddon who were asked to bowl first by Darren Laughton on a cold and showery
day.
Wollaston's innings began slowly as the Haddon seamers made it difficult for the
young batsmen (and Marcus) to score but he, Harry Broome and debutant Charlie
Elderton took the shine off the new ball. Patrick Bright and Andy Luck batted
very well together to build a solid middle order partnership and create a
platform for the big hitters, Pat eventually fell for 32 very impressive and
hard fought runs.
Darren Laughton and John Pike then really took the innings by the scruff of the
neck and dispatched anything within clouting distance! Darren scored 47 and John
45 in a partnership that included 6 sixes and increased the score by 90 runs in
only 9 overs. A target of 209 was set and the game was all square at tea.
The West Haddon openers were quick to latch onto anything even slightly wayward
and their innings got away to a very quick start. Kieron Furniss bowled well
from the pavilion end and picked up the wicket of Adam Wallinger who edged to
Cameron Pike behind the wicket.
Kurt Brown and Phil Perryman then came together for what turned out to be the
most crucial partnership of the game as they took West Haddon to 154 for 1 after
only 32 overs. John Pike broke the partnership and Adrian Ward picked up 3 late
wickets but it wasn't enough to stop the unbeaten Perryman from taking the North
Northants side over the line to victory.

With only Jones (41) and
opener Andrew Silsby (13) making double figures on a cold day at The Embankment
Wollaston would have been hoping for at least another 40 or fifty runs at tea
time after winning the toss against last seasons division 12 runners' up.
But with thirteen year old
Nathan Healey and fifteen year old Josh Steggles making their senior debuts
Wollaston took command from Healey's first ball of the innings when he trapped
Parthiv Shef lbw. He went on to finish with the quite remarkable figures of 4
for 2 off 5 overs and set up this pleasing win for the visitors. Steggles bagged
the final wicket when the Wollaston skipper took a fine catch at mid-off.

After an "up
and down" season the Seconds were eager to wrap it up on a high note and finish
in the top half of division three. Although the positive attitude was reflected
in the skipper's decision to bat first, Darren Laughton must have been
struggling to maintain a confident stance with Wollaston looking at a scoreboard
showing a paltry 46 for 5. Only David Clarkson out of the first six
batmen had reached double figures and at this stage even a three
figure total looked a long way off.
But as
he as done in the past, number seven Andrew Kowal was not going to go the same
way and when he was a joined by man-in-form Kieran Furniss they stopped the rot
and began to repair the significant damage.
Together these two all-rounders took on the Houghton bowling and really turned
the match around with a mixture of boundaries and good running. When
Furniss eventually departed with 29 to his name Jamie Perry joined Kowal and
together they carried on the good work at a rapid pace - peppering the
surrounding area with enormous sixes that kept the watching spectators on their
toes and totally riveted to the proceedings.
Perry
made 33 and Kowal was 64 not out after 50 overs.
The
momentum that Wollaston had gained from the latter half of their innings
continued after tea and Houghton, with the stuffing knocked out of them, never
really looked like getting close to what was a fairly modest total on a good
pitch and quick outfield. Wollaston's opening bowlers (John Pike and Jamie
Perry) performed well and were always on top of the visitors batting with Pike
going straight through his 15 overs to finish with 4 for 39. Perry and Kowal
shared 3 wickets before Furniss got into the act again to take 3 quick wickets
in 5 overs for just 18 runs with the last of the three wrapping up the game, and
giving Wollaston 30 points and a creditable fifth place finish .

for 42 off 12
A fantastic all round
performance from Steven Musgrave helped Wollaston to back- to- back victories,
and put any relegation speculation firmly to bed.
Wollaston chose to make first
use, on a wicket that appeared would deteriorate throughout the day. Musgrave
and Jones set up a great foundation with a 100 run partnership on the slow pitch
that was not easy to score on. Jones (33) played the supporting role to his
partner who took an aggressive role and who was eventually out for 89 including
9 fours and 3 sixes. More good work from Jimmy Hart and Chris Perry who weighed
in with a couple of boundaries towards the end of the innings helped Wollaston
to a healthy 198 for 5 in their 55 overs.
With the wicket starting to crumble and dust up, and knowing how our spin
bowlers have performed this season Wollaston were confident they could bowl the
inexperienced opposition out. Perry decided to open with himself and got us the
break- through with 49 on the board.
Musgrave was brought
into the attack early and picked up regular wickets with his usual variation.
Mark Gibbs replaced Perry claiming a wicket in a five over burst. Scott Sanders
continued to play positively for Burton dealing mainly in boundaries and at one
point it looked like the game was slipping away from Wollaston, but Muzzy along
with the skipper had too much quality for the Burton lower order. Once Perry
removed Sanders for 92 - well caught by Playfair in the deep, the Burton tail
had no answers to the spin twins who wrapped the Burton innings up in the 35th
over, Muz finishing with figures of 14/1/55/5 and Perry 12/4/42/4.
Hopefully we can make it three in a row with our final game of the season away
at Brixworth next week. If only we could have played with this confidence
earlier in the season!

Brett Hanson 33 3 for 26 off 11.1 overs
The table toppers from
Rushden came to Wollaston on Saturday looking for revenge for their defeat
earlier in the season, and at the same time secure the the Division Three title.
They won the toss and elected
to bowl first under a blue sky and hot sun. Openers Brett Hanson and Harry
Broome got innings off to a good start - posting 44 for the first wicket before
Broome was caught and bowled by Callum Nicholson. Number three and skipper
Darren Laughton was adjudged LBW with only four to his name and Brett was
eventually bowled hitting across the line to a straight one from Ben Warren.
Patrick Bright was going well
but was unfortunately run out off a mis-field for 18, Andy Luck bowled for 3 and
David Clarkson caught behind for 1.
44 for no wicket had quickly
turned into 56 for 5 and 75 for 6. Things deteriorated further and and at 93 for
8 it looked like Wollaston would not even make double figures, but when number
ten Adrian Ward joined number nine Kieran Furniss they mixed circumspection with
aggression to add 57 for the eighth wicket. Seventeen year old Furniss was the
aggressor with Ward handing the strike over to him whenever possible. With the
aid of 5 x fours and 1 x six the youngster made 45 of just 45 balls before being
stumped with just 3 of the 50 overs to go. It was a fantastic cameo innings that
would at least give the Wollaston bowlers something to bowl at and hopefully
give them a bit of a chance.
Ward was then joined by
Cameron Pike and together they attempted to use all the overs and push the score
along if possible but when the former attempted to reach the boundary he was
well caught in the deep by Sam Perry with eleven to his name and 10 balls of the
innings remaining. Pike was not out.
In reply Rushden batted
sensibly and had obviously decided to accumulate rather than slog themselves to
the total. Number three Sam Perry's 38 off 103 balls was the anchor innings and
despite Wollaston's bowlers working tirelessly to get on top, the visitors
always seemed two wickets ahead.
Kieran was again prominent -
this time with the ball. His 4 for for 26 off 12 overs was the pick of the
bowling figures and was well backed up by John Pike (2 for 33 off off 15).
With Rushden 111 for 7
Wollaston briefly had the sniff of victory but number eight Richard Eady was not
going to give the game away, and his 27 off 29 balls turned things around in his
favour and along with Ben Warren (11) took the champions to victory with 11
balls remaining.
It was a great effort from
Wollaston who fought to the end and hopefully this momentum will continue into
the final game at home to Great Houghton next week.

After a positive start, openers Matt Jones
and Steve Musgrave both fell in quick succession. Jimmy Hart took to the
crease and continued his good form from last week, and along with the Bates
brothers looked to resurrect the middle of the innings, Hart bludgeoned
seven boundaries on his way to 60. Chris Perry and Mark Carter continued the
good work from Hart both scoring freely towards the end of the innings, Perry
finishing with 38 from 34 balls and Carter 25 not out from 14 balls. Despite
the efforts of Mark Gibbs, Wollaston reached that important 200 thanks to
consecutive boundaries off the last two balls of the innings, and Wollaston
were able to enjoy the mid session spread, pleased with their efforts!
Early wickets were going to be the key to
Wollaston's success, with a strong Rushton top order, and despite some early
boundaries Wollaston bounced back with three quick wickets thanks to Jack
Playfair and the introduction of Musgrave who struck early with a well taken
catch at slip by Liam Bates.
With four wickets down and knowing what
Rushton had left in the hutch, Wollaston could sniff victory. However the
dangerous Andrew Reynoldson was still at the crease for Rushton and the
bowlers knew they would have to dig deep in order to bowl the opposition out.
Perry replaced Playfair after a good opening spell and struck early trapping
Alan Smith LBW. More good work from Liam Bates this time with an accurate
throw for a run out put Wollaston in a great position, but Reynoldson knowing
he was running out of partners continued to take the attack to Wollaston and
soon passed 50.
Playfair was re-introduced from the pavilion
end and bowled with a combination of pace and slower balls which the Rushton
tail could not handle, and when Jack uprooted the stumps of Reynoldson in 38th
over Wollaston claimed a great all round victory.
Playfair finishing with figures of
12.2/2/61/5 well supported by Musgrave who claimed three wickets in his 15
overs.
Hopefully the 1st Xl can maintain this
good run of form for the remaining two game of the season with an important
away visit to Burton Latimer next week.
Congratulations to Dave Ward and all his
3rd Xl players who achieved promotion to division 11 and also to Laughty's

In this local derby,

John Pike's 12, Andy

handy 183 for 8 off the maximum 50 overs despite Nathan McDonald taking 5 for 37

In reply, the boys
along the B569 could not get to grip with Perry who purveyed his measured swing
bowling with unerring accuracy and was rewarded with 2 wickets for just 19 runs
off 13 overs. Andy Kowal at the other end also kept a tight hold on the
Irchester middle order, and with Stephen Gollings finishing top scorer with just
19 the home side batting was in a sorry state. John Pike continued the excellent

If a captain could choose
his ideal match scenario for the final game of the season and needing a
victory to clinch promotion, this was the blueprint! Win the toss and bat, get a
good start, a solid middle order and then push on for over 200 hundred (maximum
batting points) before bowling them out to reap maximum bowling points.
And fortunately, that is basically how it went - with everyone involved.
A century opening stand
between Rex Boddington (79) and Andrew Silsby (54) set the tone and put
Wollaston on top for the remainder of the game. When both openers wearily
trudged off - Boddington bowled by Carrick and Silsby caught off the bowling of
Gibbins, number three Harry Broome continued the quest for runs and added a
classy 39. Nathan Richards (39 not out) and Paul Jones (8 not out) got
together to add 46 in just five overs and put the icing on Wollaston's cake.
Nathan struck the boundaries with great timing and Paul ran his "two's" with
enthusiasm. A very "handy" 247 for 5 was just the job!
In reply the visitors kept
their opening wicket intact until the seventeenth over but accurate opening
spells from James Pegg (1 for 22 off 10 overs) and Alex Melia (0 for 21 off 12)
restricted the the total to just 44 at the drinks break.
Nick Dawson then replaced
Melia at the pavilion end and followed two maidens (MAIDENS

) with a wicket before going on - with the help of two brilliant catches
by ubiquitous Melia and one by Nathan Richards, to take three further scalps and
rip the middle out of St Michael's middle order. Marcus Gross played a great
cameo role at the other end, taking 3 for 32 of six overs.
James Pegg came back on and
took the final wicket when he had their number ten caught behind by the
effervescent and bubbly veteran Boddington, and Wollaston won the game by 139
runs, and with it promotion to division 11.
It was a great way to finish
the season and the whole squad can be proud of the way they played the game and
conducted themselves on the pitch over the season.
Thanks are due to Dave Ekins

In a desperate attempt to get his
hands on the prized trophy for the first time, chairman Andrew Silsby
decided to bowl first on a lovely sunny afternoon at the WCG. Unfortunately
in the opening salvo he was out manoeuvred when to his surprise the
President had taken a mighty bold step by opening the batting himself, and
immediately secured the tactical high-ground.
Putting on a healthy opening stand with Lewis
Bates (36) President Barber took all the chairman's attack could throw at him
and eventually retired from the crease knowing his work was done.
Another Bates (Liam) carried on the good work with 31,
Harry Broome made 21 and Andy Luck 24 and a massive total looked on the horizon.
But years in the leading role have sharpened the tactical brain of the Chairman
and the brilliant decision of putting himself on to bowl paid dividends. His 4
wickets for just 18 runs put the skids under the batting line up and they
fell away and limped to 179 for 11 (!) in their 30 overs.
In reply, Mark Ralph was well caught by Liam Bates of
James Pegg for just five but Brett Hanson (31) and Nathan Richards (20) repaired
the damage before Matt Jones (33) carried the fight to the President who by this
time was directing things from the other side of the boundary complete with
shirt and tie. The bowlers held their nerve and despite a fine effort from Ben
Pegg (14) Harry Broome's 2 wickets for 18 were crucial and the Chairman's Eleven
fell 11 short with 168 in 30 overs.
However, magnanimity being his middle name, the
President quite correctly decided that the man of the Match award should go to
chairman Andrew Silsby for his devastating spell of seam and spin which,
although all in vain, reaped 4 for 18 in just 3 overs.
It was a great day and thanks are due to everyone who
helped on the day.

the innings the Barton bowlers held sway and only Scott Bailey could push things
along at an acceptable rate. Unfortunately, the middle order perished in the
attempt to accelerate and a total of 129 at tea looked positively anaemic
against the team in second place.
And so it proved. Opening bat Steve
Wheatman ( 80) was positive from the first ball which he smashed to the

Winning the toss
Wollaston decided to bowl on a surprisingly dry pitch (considering no covers)
and the home attack backed up this decision with accuracy and guile. Nick Dawson
removed opener Gareth Richardson for just one, and David Ward ran out fellow
opener and captain Stephen Walton for 10 to put the visitors on the back foot.
However Leon Hines (19) and Chris Lynch (18) did their utmost to steady the
innings before Elliot Knight had the former caught behind by Rex Boddington and
Alex Melia clean bowled the latter.
Three ducks then
followed which put the home side right on top with only number nine Toby

After several weeks at the
wrong end of either rain or results the Thirds gamely fought hard in Northampton
and finished up worthy winners.
Winning the toss Obelisk
opted to bat first and made a decent start - putting on 30 for the first wicket.
However, when Paul Jones
removed both openers the Wollaston attack gradually got on top of the home
side's batting and only number six P.Kingston with 21 could make much impression
in the middle order. The wickets were spread around with Jones finishing with 3
for 36 off 13, Elliot Knight 2 for 10 off 4, Nick Dawson 2 for 24 off 12 and
David Ward 2 for 20 off 11 overs.
When Wollaston lost Rex
Boddington in the fifth over number three Scott Bailey joined opener Paul
Jones at the crease with only five runs on the board. At five for one even
117 seems a long way off but between them this pair consolidated at first before
pushing the score along at a brisk rate. Five for 1 had become 74 for 1 before
Scott missed a straight one and departed with an excellent 42 to his name. Craig
Boddington joined Jones in the middle and with a mix of lusty and classy shots
the younger Boddington (much younger!) continued in the positive mode before
falling LBW to Charman for 18.
However, Paul was not to be
moved and finished with a solid 38 not out and watched as David Pegg hit the
four to win the game by seven wickets.

Winning the toss and asking the opposition to bat, Wollaston once again put in a
good all round effort with the ball and despite the efforts of the talented Asim
Butt who made 79 off 95 balls, Wollaston were happy with the total Peterborough
set. Chris Perry was the pick of the bowlers claiming his third, five wicket
haul of the season with figures of 15.5-2-64-5.
You can probably guess what happened next.... from the second over of the game
the wickets started to fall, and once the Peterborough bowlers got their tails
up the inevitable happened, and Wollaston were eventually all out for 70 in 33

As is the expected lot of a
Third Eleven, the make up of the team to eventually make it on to the
pitch understandably takes many twists and turns from Monday night selection to
1pm on Saturday. This week was no exception but what made it a little
frustrating was the fact that the Seconds game was called off after players were
moved up out of the Thirds, only to miss out on their afternoon of cricket.
So we lost the toss for the
first time this season and were inserted on a wet pitch that both sides agreed
was playable. Unfortunately it was a familiar story of late. We started off
fairly mediocre and stayed that way all through the innings. Only young
Patrick Bright looked like he would go on to score heavy against the swinging
ball on the difficult pitch, but unfortunately he was adjudged LBW when he
looked fairly comfortable. With extras giving us the highest "score" of 31 it
was a poor effort.
At 59 for 7 Wollaston looked
to be in with a chance but the Overstone youngsters had other ideas and the next
pair added 29 for the eighth wicket and took the visitors home. Another 3o runs
on the Wollaston total would possibly given a different result. Or not.
The bowlers and fielders tried hard and Nick Dawson's 4 for 11 was a fantastic
spell alongside worthy efforts from Alex Melia ( 2 for 15) and James Pegg.

The rain was once again was a major
influencing factor in the 1st Xl's run chase, as Wollaston were forced
to settle for a draw.
After losing the toss Chris Perry was relieved when the Horton captain
chose to bat as Wollaston were keen to bowl first. Although the
outfield was damp the wicket was remarkably quite dry and Horton got
off to a reasonable start at 30 without loss before Jamie Perry
claimed his maiden 1st Xl wicket thanks to a sharp catch at gulley by
Musgrave to remove Jarvis. Thomas Leonard played in his usual
aggressive manner but Playfair had his revenge with another well taken
catch at second slip by Pikey. Although a couple of the Horton middle
order got themselves in they never really kicked on under pressure
from a combination of Chris Perry, Pikey and Musgrave who offered
little for the Horton batsmen to attack. A late flurry from Andrew
Neate and Will Smith, boosted Horton up to 185 from their 55, however
with the track drying out it was a total Wollaston once again fancied
chasing down.
County paceman Luke Evans struck early for Horton, removing Lewis
Bates caught behind after a period of early pressure. Jimmy Hart was
determined to play in his usual aggressive manner and with rain
threatening throughout the day this was perhaps not a bad option if
Wollaston were going to reach their target, however one shot too many
was Hart's downfall after failing to pick a slower ball from Will
Smith and he was adjudged LBW. Hart was quickly joined in the pavilion
by Ralph and Musgrave, however it was not long before all players were
forced to leave the field after another down pour.
From a neutrals point of view it appeared the game had swayed slightly
in Horton's favour, however despite the loss of Hart, Ralph and
Musgrave, Wollaston still felt they had enough fire power left to bat
around Matt Jones to reach the target. A delay of nearly half an hour
resulted in the loss of 7 overs which once again changed the
perspective of the game, and when play resumed and Wollaston lost
Marcus Shelton, the skipper decided we would have to settle for the
draw. Jones and Carter had the remaining 12 overs to bat out, and
despite the dismissal of Carter with a couple of overs remaining, a
spurt of late boundaries from skipper Perry saw Wollaston reach 125
to gain an extra bonus point, with Jones batting through to finish on
55 not out.
With a majority of the other games washed out around the county I
guess we were lucky to get a game in, however the weather proved a
frustrating factor in a game Wollaston had targeted for victory.
Wollaston travel to the in form Stony Stratford next week in what I'm
sure will be another challenging encounter.

Wollaston won the toss

Things didn't go to

Jamie Chamberlain (50) and number three Gareth Smith (57) put the hosts in

Following the tremendous win against high

the team just behind them in division three.
Emulating the First Eleven
skipper decision on the day, Darren Laughton won the toss and opted to bat on a
showery late June afternoon, but the start of the innings didn't go well and
never recovered, despite 32 from number three David Clarkson. Both openers had
gone with only 2 on the board and in the middle order both Darren Laughton and
Andy Luck were kept down to single figures.
Number six Kieran Furniss
improved the score slightly with 14 and number seven Mark Gibbs finished top
scorer with 23 and Andy Kowal and Adrian Ward added 10 and 12 not out
respectively. It all added up to a modest 112 all out in 41 overs.
With occasional rain forcing
the teams to seek refuge in the pavilion from time to time it was difficult for
both teams to attain a degree of momentum, but the Home side's early batting
fared no better than the visitors, and after a great spell of left arm seam
bowling from Mark Gibbs ( 4 for 39 off 13) with the board reading 60 for six,
Wollaston were getting a slight sniff of victory.
However, it wasn't to be and
number six Colin Wayman guided Houghton to victory with 54 not out, taking them

With one eye on the weather
Wollaston won the toss and decided to give the Bugbrooke side first knock
on a pitch which was subjected to a strong cross wind. Things didn't go
exactly to plan and at 95 for one the home side looked to be in the ascendancy
despite an excellent and economical bowling stint by Alex Melia whose nine overs
only yielded 18 runs. A second wicket stand of 78 threatened to be the basis of
a big total with number three left hander N Coleman treating the Wollaston
attack with distain.
However, when Nick
Dawson was brought back on for his second spell he made an immediate impact and
along with James Pegg made progress through the St Michael middle order. Coleman
was bowled by Dawson and the innings started to disintegrate.
Dawson bowled
beautifully and finished with 5 for 33 off 13 overs supported excellently by Pegg
who finished with 3 for 29 -
also off 13 overs.
St Michael 74 were all
out for 134 in the 45th over.
As the teams left the
field for tea a heavy drizzle continued for 15 minutes but abated before the
resumption, although the now-drying pitch took on new life and made run scoring
more difficult against the accurate home bowling. Opener Rex Boddington departed
in the fifth over when he was bowled by J Chapman and Pat Bright was unluckily
run out - putting Wollaston in the perilous position of 22 for 3. However
when Nathan Dawson joined resilient opener Brett Hanson they put on
70 for the 4th wicket to put the visitors on a more challenging level. Dawson
was eventually out for 36 and Hanson followed 19 runs later with 52 to his name
at which point twenty five were still needed for victory.
With the total in his
sights, number six Craig Boddington guided Wollaston home with both
circumspection and hard hitting and stroked the winning boundary with a delicate
glance off his legs in the 30 over to give the batting side maximum points.

The Seconds travelled to "table-toppers"
Rushden and pulled off a fantastic win.
The hosts won the toss and decided to give
Wollaston first dig on a decent track surrounded by a vast outfield over one
side of the arena.
It was not a great start. Both openers went
cheaply and it took a resolute knock from number three David Clarkson (43) and
38 not out from number six Harry Broome to improve the situation by tea time.
Number ten Adrian Ward (15) and skipper Darren Laughton chipped with important
contributions to give Wollaston a defendable total of 152 for 8 in 50 overs.
Despite losing Barry Eales for a duck
Rushden started brightly with fellow opener Ben Warren making 46 and number five
Grant Timms 31, but when Andy Kowal clean bowled the former and Jamie Perry had
the latter well caught by keeper Cameron Pike, the innings started to
disintegrate for the Town team.
Adrian Ward then purveyed his off-breaks
perfectly to work through the middle and late order with only the experienced
Steve Chessum ( 19) hanging around longer to any degree. But when Andy
Silsby took a stunning catch off Ward to remove the ex-first team captain, and
Andy Luck judged his skier to perfection - which ironically would have been a
six without the extended boundary, the end was looming for the batting side. The
end for Rushden came when Marcus Gross won the game by giving Pike the
chance to take his 4th catch of the innings - falling six runs short and
giving Wollaston the satisfaction that only a fantastic win can bring.

The support came in the form of number five Craig Boddington who battled hard to
overcome the vagaries of a drying pitch before taking on the bowlers and
increasing the run rate. His 31 ( including six fours) along with Scott Bailey's
excellent 26 pulled things around before Alex Melia (21) and James Pegg

After winning the toss,
skipper Chris Perry asked Rushton to bat on what appeared a soft wicket.
Wollaston struck immediately after Lewis Bates put down a catch off Playfair at
square leg, only to pick the ball up and run Rushton's opener Matt Bell out with
a direct hit at the bowlers end. Some lack lustre bowling allowed Rushton to
quickly get on top of the Wollaston attack and Playfair was once again pulling
his hair out after more catches were put down off his bowling! however he was
finally rewarded with the scalp of Andrew Reynoldson well caught by Musgrave at
mid off.
Perry and Musgrave were soon brought into the attack and on a slow turning
wicket they gradually bought Wollaston back into the game after Musgrave had Ben
Mansell finally caught in the deep by Pikey, Jonathon Carpenter trapped LBW and
Marc Jackson caught in the deep by a fantastic effort by Matt Jones, although
his celebration was ridiculous! The Rushton tail offered little resistance and
with a little assistance from Liam Bates who picked up a wicket in his three
over burst, Perry and Musgrave wrapped up the Rushton innings in the last over,
finishing on 195 a great effort after it was looking like we could be chasing a
big score after 20 overs into the innings.
After a good feed! Wollaston set about the Rushton attack and at under four runs
an over fancied chasing down the target, unfortunately Lewis Bates was removed
early fending outside off stump with a well taken chance by Jasper Davies behind
the stumps. Liam Bates promoted to the number three birth certainly went to the
crease with a point to prove and along with Matt Jones started to construct a
solid partnership only for the heavens to open forcing the players to leave the
field for the second time of the day. After approximately a half hour delay play
resumed however Wollaston had lost 5 overs off their allotted 55, which
certainly changed the state of the game and added to the pressure of the run
chase.
Like Wollaston, Rushton introduced spin
early and despite some prosperous overs the lack of pace and turn in the wicket
gradually halted the Wollaston progress. We needed either Jones or Batesy to go
on and make a big score unfortunately Jones was adjudged LBW after the ball
appeared to be sliding down the leg side. Wollaston's go to man to add impetus
into the innings Mark Ralph was left kicking himself after sweetly striking his
first delivery into the hand of the leaping Rushton fielder at short cover.
Jimmy Hart back in the fold after a spell out injured, adopted his usual
aggressive style from the start, striking a couple of boundaries in quick
succession, however just when he was looking settled at the crease gave it away
with a loose shot off the spin of Andrew Reynoldson and was caught at slip, and
when Musgrave was removed in Reynoldson's next over Wollaston were once again
facing an uphill battle in their run chase, with the rate creeping over six runs
an over.
Liam Bates continued to play positively but fell short of his 50, when he was
given out LBW off the bowling of Carpenter. Wollaston chucked in John Pike in a
last ditch attemp at some quick fire runs, but when he fell on the wrong side of
a close run out shout, it was looking unlikely that the target would be reached.
Mark Carter and Perry played out the final 6 overs picking up an extra point
when 150 was passed, and the Wollaston innings finished on 153-7 off 50 overs.
The way we turned the bowling round really gave us a good shot at victory,
however the loss of 5 overs and missing that vital partnership or two moved the
game out of our reaches, and shows we still need to improve at chasing down
targets.

However, the middle order rallied and 27

A lack of runs and missed chances in the
field resulted in the fourth defeat of the season for the first team.
After being inserted on a wet wicket following more bad weather this week, early
conditions were tough with the ball swinging and seaming off the pitch in what
appeared bowler friendly conditions. The lack of pace in Karl Tapp's bowling and
the quality of county prospect Christian Davis made runs hard to come by early
on, and it was not long before early wickets fell with both Wollaston openers
and Musgrave all falling in quick succession.
Mark Ralph came to the crease and made things look easy with some classy shots
through the covers and along with Liam Bates looked to rebuild the Wollaston
innings, unfortunately Liam's poor trot of form continued, which is
disappointing for all to see for a player of his ability, and Wollaston once
again appeared to be struggling with the bat. Mark Carter came to the crease and
managed to pick up a couple of early boundaries which helped his confidence, but
when Ralph was caught in the gulley the Wellingborough bowlers once again got
their backs up. Skipper Perry fell early caught in the slips attempting a cut
shot off spinner Oli Andrew, which brought Simon Driver to the crease who
provided support to Carter to continued absorb the pressure from
the Wellingborough attack. Once Driver fell the Wollaston tail didn't wag like
it has done in the past, and despite passing his 50 Carter was stranded at the
other end as the innings finished on 127 all out with Wellingborough's overseas
seamer finishing with figures of 15-3-48-6. In all honesty once again too many
good players are getting themselves out, but at least we had something to bowl
at!
It was decided to go with the in form Perry along with Playfair with the new
ball, as there was both turn and bounce in the pitch, and along with Playfair's
swing early pressure started to build on the Wellingborough openers. Carter
spilled a chance off Playfair diving across in front of what should have been a
regulation first slip catch, and when Wellingborough opener Josh Bateman was put
down once again off the bowling of Playfair a couple of overs later alarm bells
started ringing that it possibly wasn't going to be our day. Wellingborough
skipper Ed Turnham offered very little other than defence to Perry and when he
finally attempted a shot Perry found the edge and he was well caught at slip by
Liam.
Musgrave replaced the unlucky Playfair at the Pavilion end and continued with
the rhythm he has shown over the last couple of games, getting on top of the
Wellingborough players immediately and removed Thomas Mills caught behind by
Carter. John Pike replaced Perry at the Strixton end and old golden arm managed
to pick up two wickets in two deliveries which put the game in the balance, and
then took a good catch in the deep off the bowling of Musgrave swinging the game
back in the favour of Wollaston. Perry brought himself back into the attack in
an attempt to remove danger man Christian Davis, and after some swift glove work
to remove Hitten Mistry stumped off Perry Wollaston started to sniff victory.
However further dropped catches towards the end and the quality of Davis
eventually cost Wollaston the game as they reached their target with four overs
remaining. Musgrave was the pick of the Wollaston bowlers with figures of
17-3-38-3. The fielding has really improved this season and the boys are working
hard in training but unfortunately on this occasion we let ourselves down.
Playfair will bowl worse in following games and take wickets I'm sure!
We must now pick our heads up as we approach the half way point, with some
character building performances over a run of tricky fixtures in the next couple
of weeks.

Openers Haydn James and Rex Boddington had

could only add two more to the total. However, when Nathan Dawson replaced
Nathan Richards at the crease they created a 151 fifth wicket partnership that
turned the game in Wollaston's favour. Both batsmen were dismissed with 2 runs

The lower order then chipped in to reach a

In reply Barton got off to a good start.
Openers Steve Wheatman (66) and Dave Wills added 80 for the first wicket before
the former was excellently caught by Scott Bailey off the bowling of Marcus

With spirits high from last week's result and
the exciting prospect of playing at the County Ground, the 1st Xl came up short
in their run chase against a young Academy Xl.
The Academy won the toss and decided to have a bat. Just as play was about to
commence a nagging drizzle set in over the ground which delayed the start for an
hour. After managing to drag Muzzy away from the Black Jack table we had set up,
the boys took to the field and had immediate success in the first over after
Playfair seemed to bamboozle the opening batsmen with an inswinging yorker that
the batsmen appeared to have lost site of and he was trapped plum LBW.
John Pike replaced Playfair from the Wantage Road End and bowled with his usual
line and length, which appeared to some what frustrate the young Academy batsmen
who were intent on looking to score quickly and John was rewarded after Saif
Bhojani chopped one back onto his stumps. Exciting prospects Curran Gaur and
Ryan Findlay looked to build a partnership as Wollaston introduced Perry into
the attack, however after some early success against Perry and after surviving a
close stumping shout, Perry had his revenge and had Gaur caught at mid off by
Muzzy after miss timing a full toss. Perry then struck in quick
succession removing Sean Davis with a sharp slip catch by Liam Bates and Marc
Bell after the leaping salmon Matt Jones rose at mid wicket to take another good
catch.
Findlay kept the score board ticking for the Academy, along with Academy skipper
Jordan Capel, however Liam proved what a good pair of hands he has got with
another well taken catch low down at square leg off the bowling of Musgrave to
remove Findlay for 69. The Academy players never really got on top of the flight
and guile of Musgrave and after Capel was removed, stumped by Carter the tail
end showed little resistance and as seen many a time before Musgrave mopped up
the tail claiming his first five wicket haul of the season and finishing with
figures of 11.4-0-44-5. Another good effort in the field on a good wicket and a
short boundary to one side, with the Academy closing on 231.
Matt Jones returning to his
opening birth, along with Lewis Bates got Wollaston off to a good start and the
opening pair reached their 50 partnership in the 15th over with the run rate
ticking along nicely. The introduction of spin once again seemed to get on top
of the Wollaston players, and despit some well timed cut shots by Jones to the
short boundary some tight bowling and well placed field settings saw the
pressure starting to build on the opening pair. After reaching their 100
partnership and with the fire power still to come in, Wollaston never really
kicked on with their innings and gradually the run rate was beggining to rise.
Jones was dismissed for 69 after miss timing a sweep shot and was caught at
short fine leg. Lewis fell a couple of overs later for 41, and after Mark Ralph
was dismissed first ball suddenly the backs were against the wall. Muzzy and
Liam tried to put some impetus back into the innings, however the overs kept
ticking off and after Musgrave was dismissed the rate was up to 9 an over. Liam
struck a couple of nice boundaries on his way to 25, however by this time
Wollaston never really looked like reaching the total. Perhaps the earlier
introduction of Pikey may have made things interesting after he smighted this
first ball over the players pavilion for 6, but hindsight is a wonderful thing,
and the Wollaston innings finished on 197 for 6 with Carter 14 not out at the
end.
Another good effort, but still lots to learn!

There appeared to be a trend developing to
my writing over the last couple of weeks, however with the sun beating down in
perfect cricket conditions, Wollaston claimed their first victory of the season
with an emphatic five wicket win over Old Northamptonians.
After winning the toss ON's skipper Tom Webb chose to bat and probably fancied
his side's chances of bowling Wollaston out considering their recent run of form
with the bat. Simon Driver got Wollaston off to a good start with the new ball,
claiming that all important first wicket with a ball judged to have flicked the
glove of the ON's opener going down the leg side which was snapped up by Carts
behind the stumps. ON's skipper and opener Tom Webb decided attack was the best
option and struck a number of boundaries before he was trapped LBW playing
across the line to Playfair who's pace and movement of the ball posed problems
for the ON's batters and showed he was getting better each game he has played.
Simon Driver who kept things tight with the new ball was replaced by John Pike
at the Pavilion end, who appeared to have found that all important rhythm which
is vital to Pikey's bowling and he was rewarded in his third over after Paul
Harris feathered and edge to Carts behind. Despite a couple of edges through the
slip cordon Arblaster and Khawaja didn't appear phased by the Wollaston attack
and both were heading towards half centuries, until the introduction of in form
Chris Perry was brought into the attack and removed both batsmen in quick
succession, bowling Arblaster after beating him with flight and trapping Khawaja
infront of the stumps. Ex Northants man David Wigley appeared to be getting
settled however lacked any form of support from the remaining ON's batters who
couldn't get to grips with the pressure being created by Muzzy and Pez, who once
again wrapped up the tail in another fantastic all round bowling and fielding
performance. Carts claimed his fourth victim of the day with a circusesque catch
finally taken on the fourth attempt, and Pez claimed his second five wicket haul
of the season with figures of 11-1-32-5, well supported by Musgrave with figures
of 13.5-1-31-2. Once again half the job done!
The Bates brothers opened up the innings in the absence of Matt Jones, both
hoping to get that first big score of the season, and Liam just hoping for his
first run of the season! After both appeared to be getting settled and the shine
disappearing off the new ball, both fell in quick succession, with Lewis timing
a half volley nicely off his legs only to find the fielder at mid wicket and
Liam was dismissed by a fantastic diving one handed effort in the gulley when
the ball appeared to be racing to the boundary. I'm sure a big score is just
around the corner for both players. Muzzy and Ralphy both battled hard early in
their innings for the Wollaston cause in the face of some hostile bowling first
from Afaq Babar then from David Wigley, only for the Muzzy to get caught trapped
in front when the pressure appeared to be easing, who was removed for 29. Andy
Luck making his Premiership debut was looking to round off a fantastic week for
him after celebrating the birth of his second born son, unfortunately Skip
failed to trouble the scorers again being dismissed LBW by the accurate bowling
of Zed Babar.
Mark Ralph proved that class was permanent and form only temporary as he was
soon back to his flamboyant best, at times striking boundaries at ease. He was
joined by Carts who rotated the strike well and the pair quickly moved onto
their 50 partnership. Ralph took a shining to the young ON's spinner using his
feet well, and quickly moved to his first half century of the season. After this
the runs continued to flow until the partnership of 82 was broken after Carts
was caught at backward point for 21. Pez joined Ralphy at the crease and a
couple of overs later the game was over, with Wollaston wrapping up victory with
10 overs to spare and 5 wickets in hand. A well deserved innings of 82 not out
from Mark Ralph was a pleasure to watch and will hopefully be the start that
will spur on his season.
Overall a fantastic all round effort against a side we have often struggled
against in the past. Things are on the up!

Fresh from last weeks victory the seconds
headed off to Nether Heyford with a spring in our step. Despite four changes to
the side the team looked good and we were quietly confident of getting a result.
We won the toss and decided to have a bowl. After eventually managing to hide
some of our less mobile players in the field Gibbo and Jamie were unleashed on
Heyford's unsuspecting batsmen. Both of them bowled with fantastic skill and
quickly reduced Heyford to 60 for 5. With the burning sun clearly taking its
toll on Gibbo's gigantic frame Alex Melia was introduced to the attack. His
first delivery was a ferocious bouncer, the batsmen was clearly taken by
surprise and decided to hit the ball straight to the man on the boundary. That
turned out to be Alex's of the day but he should be very happy with his
excellent spell of 8 ,1 ,15.
The batting side did start to mount a recovery but Jamie returned to take his
fifth wicket of the day and finish with figures of 15,7,28,5. Adrian Ward kept
plugging away and was eventually rewarded with 3 wickets as he mopped up the
tail. We had bowled them out for 138 and sat down for tea very happy.
After losing Harmit quickly , Sils and DC set about knocking off the runs with
some classy stroke play. they put on 108 before DC fell for 38. Brett joined
Sils and settled very quickly despatching some beautifully timed shots between
the slips. Things wouldn't be the same if we did things easily and with 15
needed we had a slight wobble. Sils brilliant innings eventually came to an end
on 58. Harry went without troubling the scorers and just to make him feel better
Laughty decided to do the same ( think Batesy must be passing on his form) Just
when we were starting to worry out walked Gibbo and hoiked a couple of 4's to
get us over the line.
Another great win for the boys and another Sunday morning hangover for me :)

started briskly with fellow opener Patrick Bright setting the standard with a
classy 45.
The rest of the middle order contributed to
Wollaston's record score - passing the previous record total of 283 for 3
against Grendon in 2011.
In reply Obelisk were kept in check by Nick
Dawson who remarkably bowled six overs for no runs. He returned to take
the final wicket and finished with figures of nine overs, 1 for 3.
David Ward took 4 for 25 off 10 and

Wollaston 1st team suffered
their third consecutive defeat of the season at the hands of last years
champions Finedon Dolben.
Another impressive bowling and fielding performance restricted the hosts to 184
for 8 in their alloted 55 overs. The pick of the bowlers was once again Chris
Perry with figures of 4 for 35 in 17 overs, and was well supported by Musgrave,
Playfair and Driver. Thanks must also go to Coach Neal Perry who filled in for
Clarky who had to leave the field after injuring his arm in a collision with the
sight screen!
The batting performance unfortunately couldn't match the hard work we had done
with the ball, as once again a combination of poor decision making and shot
selection, meant wickets fell all to easily. Matt Jones looked well on his way
to his first half century of the season with some elegant shots of his legs to
the mid wicket boundary, however a lapse in concentration caused Matt to chase a
wide delivery which found the edge of his bat and he was caught behind.
Hopefully this innings will kick start Matt's season as we will need him firing
on all cylinders, in a bid for a batting revival. Jack Chopping was the pick of
the Finedon bowlers with figures of 6 for 28 off 16 overs.

After grimly hanging
on for a draw the previous week , the 2's were desperate to finally
get their season up and running. The day didn't start well with
opening bat David Clarkson called up to first team at 9.30 am but
thankfully after an hour of phoning , Jimmy Hart was eventually
woken from his drunken slumber and drafted into the side.
After an excellent warm up before the game, the toss was won and in
gloomy conditions Wollaston decided to bowl. From the first ball of
the innings it was clear that things wouldn't be easy for the
Crispin batsmen against a fired up pace trio of M Gibbs 15 -2-40-3
, J Perry 15-2-59-4 and A Kowal 13-2-40-1 .
Despite opener J
Harris scoring 58 none of the batsmen looked comfortable and wickets
fell at regular intervals giving us hope of keeping them down to
below 150. A brisk 46 from N Quenby at 8 pushed their score to 176
before he fell to Aidy Ward who finished with figures of 6.2 - 0 -
31 - 2. A fabulous effort by all the bowlers and fielders - in
particular 13yr old Cam Pike behind the stumps taking 4 excellent
catches and only being denied a 5for by his skipper swooping in to
take the final catch.
We tucked into a fabulous Mrs Silsby tea feeling quietly confident
of chasing down the total . Skipper Darren Laughton's call for
patience when batting seemed to have sunk in and out went Marcus and
Sils to open the innings. 7 overs later the ball had been blasted to
all parts of the ground and we were 40 for 2 but certainly looking
positive. No one more so than Jimmy who due to his obvious lack of
fitness decided that running clearly wasn't for him as he set about
despatching the Crispin bowling attack with disdain.
Another wicket fell and out to
crease strolled our other young gun Harry Broome. In a sign of
things to come we were treated to some amazing shots and a sense of
timing that had most of us old timers drooling. Harry eventually
went for 13 but he can be very happy with his efforts. Laughty
strolled out to the crease and next ball walked back to the changing
room and Gibbo's brief but brutal innings pushed us ever closer to
that elusive win . AK joined Jimmy and together they batted sensibly
to take us to within 10 of our target before Jimmy fell to a good
catch for a fine 69. but despite some nervous nail biting Andy Kowal
and Jamie Perry saw us over the line and to our first win of
the season.
The game showed all that is positive with the second team, and
despite of some fine individual performances this was ultimately a
great team effort

AN eighth wicket stand of 95 between Nathan
Richards (61) and Marcus Gross (48 not out) rescued the Wollaston innings and
set up the game for the bowlers with a decent total behind them.
At 91 for seven we were looking very
fragile and wondered if we would even collect a single batting a point.
But Nathan Richards and Marcus Gross had other ideas and with sensible batting
they gradually steadied the innings before eventfully dominating the Overstone
bowlers. After a circumspect start Richards raced to his 50 and finished with a
magnificent 61, including eleven boundaries. He was ably supported by Gross who
stroked an accomplished 48 not out including two sixes and together the
youngsters made sure the Wollaston scorecard was in better shape on a
bitterly cold mid-May day. Earlier Rex Boddington had opened his account
for the season with a solid 37.
For the hosts, Ashil Patel bowled his left
arm spin with good effect and deserved his excellent figures of 2 for 37 off 13
overs.
In reply, after a positive start from
opener Mick Fairey ( 24 off 13 balls ) Overstone struggled against Alex Melia in
particular and Wollaston looked in command.
However, number five Oli Clarke (49) and
captain Darren Shelford (not out 36) fought back and made a real fight of it
before Marcus Gross broke through and finished with 3 for 32 off eight and Adam
Tee, in his last game at Wollaston ( for the time being!) picked up 2 for
25 off 10. In his second spell Melia picked up another wicket to finish
with excellent figures of 3 for 36 off 39
A good game played in excellent spirit

After a disappointing result
last week, the 1st Xl were looking to bounce back against bogey team Northampton
Saints, unfortunately another disappointing performance with the bat saw us slip
to our second defeat in consecutive weeks.
Skipper Chris Perry won his second toss of the season and instinctively asked
the opposition to bat. Credit must go to all those who assisted in preparing the
ground this week, and considering the bought of dreadful weather we have had
recently the wicket played pretty well all game, and the ground was getting
towards its usual immaculate state.
Jack Playfair was full of enthusiasm from the pavilion end and showed good signs
of things to come as he consistently got the ball to move away from the right
hander, whilst Simon Driver operated from the Strixton end with his usual
nagging inswing, and was rewarded for his persistence in his fourth over
removing Dan Harris with a well taken catch at mid wicket by Matt Jones.
Kieran Furniss replaced Playfair at the Pavilion end, and proved what an
exciting prospect he is for years to come trapping Saints overseas dangerman LBW
in his second over. John Pike toiled away at the other end without success, but
with some good fielding Wollaston continued to probe at the Saints onslaught.
Chris replaced Kieran at the Pavilion end and was rewarded early doors bowling
Alec Swann after he inside edged onto his stumps attempting a drive through the
covers. Captain Chris Park and Mark Wolstenholme dug in for the Saints, and
combined well to form a partnership consisting of well struck boundaries and
good running between the wicket. Just when the partnership looked to be getting
away from us Lewis Bates swooped and released early from cover, dismissing
Wolstenholme with a direct hit.
Park continued to keep the Saints scoreboard ticking over, using his feet well
to the spinners and putting the bad ball away with conviction, however Perry
once again struck bowling Park, and after that Saints showed little resistance
to the Wollaston attack, with the last four wickets falling for less than 20
runs. Perry finished with figures of 6 - 45 of 14 overs assisted by well taken
catches in the deep by Muzzy and Lewis as well as one off his own bowling. Jack
Playfair bowled well at the death and got that vital first wicket taking the
last Saints wicket, caught behind by Carts, with the Saints finishing on 195.
Job half done, and a score we certainly would have taken at the start of the
day......
Looking to make amends for last
weeks effort, and rebuild some reputations, Wollaston set about chasing down a
total they thought was achievable, however disaster struck early after Lewis
Bates attempted a run that was never really on and was claimed by the deadly
direct hit. Muzzy and Jones were removed in quick succession both being bowled
by Andy Oram, who's line and length posed problems all afternoon, and when Liam
Bates was trapped LBW by Oram without scoring, Wollaston were staring down the
barrel once again.
Ralph survived a questionable caught behind shout, but did not make the most of
his luck a snicked off an over later. Carter and Perry showed some resistance
but struggled to get the score board moving, and considering Perry topped scored
with 13! the Saints were always in control despite resistance from Pez and Pikey
the wickets continued to fall, and Wollaston were eventually all out for 71 in
the 49th over.
The batters must take a long hard look at themselves this week, and continue to
work hard in the nets to rectify this poor form. The talent is certainly there
and we will need every drop of it going into next weeks clash against last years
champions Finedon Dolben.

Openers Andrew Silsby

Scorecard
Wollaston entered the National ECB
competition for the first time and travelled to Kibworth CC from the
Leicestershire Premier League, for the first round.
At a fantastic venue, Wollaston won the toss and elected to bowl first. The
opening partnership of John Pike and Kieran Furnace made the most of some
overcast conditions getting the ball to move through the air, causing some early
problems for the Kibworth opening batsmen. Jamie Perry replaced Pike and
continued to put pressure on the opening pair, and was eventually rewarded in
his second over forcing the batsmen into a rash shot which was well taken at
backward point by the safe hands of Liam Bates.
Liam Bates was brought into the attack at the Pavilion End and after he got his
usual first over nerves out the way settled into some rhythm, and was unlucky
not to have the dangerous Kibworth number 3 batsmen caught at wid wicket by the
usual safe hands of Musgrave! Unfortunately he continued on to score 68 which
evntually proved a match winning innings. Jamie continued from the top end and
on a slow wicket the Kibworth batters never really managed to get on top of him,
finishing with impressive figures of 1-21 off 9 overs.
Musgrave replaced Jamie from the top end and made up for his earlier misdemeanor
with a sharp reaction catch off his own bowling, to dismiss the Kibworth number
4. Pez replaced Batesy from the pavilion end and despite some well struck
boundaries by the Kibworth number 3, got his revenge trapping him LBW and
getting the number 5 caught in the safe stomach of Jamie in the covers!
The Kibworth innings finished on 188 for 7 after their alloted 45 overs, a total
we probably would have taken had it been offered to us at the start of the day.
The Wollaston innings didn't get off to a great start with Musgrave surviving a
close LBW appeal and Liam Bates getting run out without scoring after a break
down in communication with his partner. Our backs were certainly against the
wall after both Musgrave and Clarkson were both bowled in quick succession.
Ralphy did his usual trick of finding the boundary with some nice shots but just
as he was getting settled was on the recieving end of a close LBW shout, and was
dismissed for 19. Andy Luck weathered some early pressure and gradually began to
find his feet and continued to chip away at the Kibworth attack. Unfortunately
the middle order was unable to forge that vital partnership, and it wasn't until
the introduction of Pikey where the innings gained any impetus. John went about
business in his usual way and found the boundary on numerous occasions with his
usual lusty blows, unfortunately with the run rate continuing to rise and overs
running out Andy went for one shot too many and was dismissed for a well
fought 43. The remaining two wickets fell in quick succession and Wollaston were
eventually all out for 147 in 42 overs, Pikey finishing with 32 not out.
Credit must go to the guys who stepped up from the 2nd Xl, who did themselves
proud, were a credit to club and got a taste of what Premiership standard
cricket is all about. I would like to thank Kibworth Cricket Club for their
hospitality and wish them all the best in the next round of the competition.

Wollaston 30 all out in 24 overs
Peterborough 31 for 5 in 9 overs Lost 5

Steve Musgrave 3 for 12 off 4 overs Chris
Perry 2 for 18 off 5 overs
With further speculation during the week
regarding whether any play would be possible again due to the monsoon season we
seem to experiencing, it was nice to finally get some cricket under our belts.
Unfortunately with most of the guys not feeling bat on ball for nearly the best
part of a month now, losing the toss and being asked to bat on a wet wicket
against a strong Peterborough outfit was never going to be an easy task.
Although the opening partnership of Lewis
Bates and Matt Jones weathered some early pressure against the new ball which
was consistenly popping off a length making scoring difficult, Matt got another
one that reared up at him and unfortunately found his gloves to offer an easy
catch at second slip. This was the start of what can only be described as a
classic Wollaston collapse with experienced campaigner Ajaz Akhtar proving
there's life in the old dog yet! On a wicket that was made for him he bowled
with his usual accuracy and the wickets continued to fall with Ajaz eventually
finishing with figures of 7-14 off 12 overs. Only Lewis Bates showed any grit
and dug in on a tough wicket, unfortunately his 11 was never going to be a match
winning score. The introduction of last seasons leading wicket taker in the Prem,
Paul McMahon didn't make life any easier and the innings was finally wrapped up
for a disappointing 30, only 4 more than the 1st Xl's lowest total of 26 against
Overstone in 1972!
Shell shocked skipper CP, did his best to encourage the boys to go and give it
their best shot, as stranger things have happened on the cricket field, and
considering the conditions it was decided that we would open the bowling with
the spin partnership of Perry and Musgrave. The Peterborough batsmen clearly
wanted the game over as quickly as possible judging by some of the
exuberant shots they attempted, and with his final delivery of the first over
Pez lept like a salmon to take a one handed caught and bowled to remove opener
David Clarke. When Alan Burton was removed a couple of overs later attempting to
blast one of Muzzy's looping off spinners out of the park, only to be stumped by
Carts, there was a slight glimmer of light at the end of a long tunnel!
Some well struck boundaries by Asim Butt unfortunately pushed the game out of
our reaches and although a further 3 wickets fell including a sharp catch from
Jack Playfair off the bowling of Pez, a score of 30 was never going to be
enough. Another 20 to 30 runs on the Wollaston total would certainly have made
life interesting for the Peterborough batsmen! Muz finished with figures of 3-12
off 4 overs and Pez 2-18 off 4.5 overs.
A disappointing day for the first team who must pick themselves up for a
difficult run of fixtures over the next couple of weeks, which will test the
character of the team!

results and fixtures
Under the leadership of new captain Chris Perry, the 1st team travelled to
Horton House for the season opener, looking to pick up some early season points.
Unfortunately the weather during the week in the lead up to the game has not
been kind to say the least and there was doubt that we would even get any play
in whatsoever.
Pez won the toss and asked Horton to bat on what appeared to be a more that
friendly bowlers wicket! New overseas Aussie Jack Playfair was presented his 1st
Xl cap by coach Paul Bates, who then produced one of his arousing speeches to
set the players on their way.
Unfortunately after only one overs play some rather dark and large grey clouds
moved over the ground and the heavens opened! Credit must go to the Horton
ground staff who worked hard to remove any free standing water from the square,
once the down pour had stopped. After numerous 'silly games' in both the
changing rooms and on the out field, an early tea was taken much to the delight
of the lads!, and play resumed at 3pm.
Horton got off too a good start and didn't seem phased by the conditions quickly
racing to 45 without loss, however the introduction of veteran Steven Musgrave
and Pez soon slowed the run rate down. Muzzy picked up a sharp caught and bowled
chance and Pez bowled dangerman Jack Johnson with his first delivery of the
season! Both showed signs of some early season form and once again bowled well
in tandem which will be essential to our success throughout the season.
Just when Wollaston were clawing their way back into the game, with Horton 54-2
off 18 overs, a combination of heavy rain and hale hit the ground again, and
this time the umpires felt it was enough to bring play to an end.
Overall a frustrating start, but there is a long way to go!
SECOND ELEVEN - No play - rain 3 points
Wollaston Cricket Club v Sheriff Hutton Bridge Cricket Club
Saturday 14th
April 2012. 1pm start at Sheriff Hutton Bridge Cricket Club.
To
finish the pre-season programme for 2012 the first eleven travelled up to
Sheriff Hutton Bridge to play their premier division side. After an early meet
and a smooth journey up we arrived at 10.45am much to Muzzy’s annoyance.
On arrival the
weather was very poor and prompted talk of how we would fill the day if the
cricket had to be cancelled. A suggestion from Mark Ralph back in his old
hunting ground was to visit the local cinema; this idea was in no uncertain
terms rejected out of hands by bus driver Tom Hodson. As woman and children
may be reading this the reply from Tom was along the lines of “Mark, we shall
not be going to the cinema today, that is a poor suggestion but we appreciate
you giving the lads ideas.” Luckily after having a cup of tea in a very
hospitable pub the weather cleared up and we travelled to the ground.
Wollaston batted first in a 40 over a side
contest. The Bates brothers passed 50 each and retired to give the other lads
a bat. Mark Carter played positively to get to 27 not out and other noticeable
contributions came from Steve Musgrave, Mark Ralph and Simon Driver. Wollaston
innings closed on 163 – 7 off 40 overs.
After tea Wollaston went out to try and
defend the score we had posted in the first innings. The two openers Mark
Gibbs and overseas player for 2012 Jack Playfair bowled tightly in tandem for
10 overs. This was then backed up by first change bowlers Chris Perry and
Simon Driver who picked up a wicket each. Steve Musgrave and Liam Bates then
had a bowl where they also picked up a wicket a piece. After 27 overs of the
Sheriff Hutton Bridge Cricket Club innings a hail shower stopped play. With
the weather closing in and the temperature so cold that players were
complaining of brain freeze, both sides agreed that a productive and enjoyable
pre-season friendly had run its course.
The lads then went on to have a night out in
York which was enjoyed by all.
We would
like to thank everybody at Sheriff Hutton Bridge Cricket Club for their
hospitality and wish them a good season.

REPORTS 2011
A FIFTH PLACE FINISH FOR FIRST ELEVEN
DESPITE DEFEAT AT PETERBOROUGH
Wollaston 136 for 8 in 55 overs
Peterborough 137 for 5 in 43 overs Lost 6 points
scorecard
The away fixture at Peterborough is never
easy and Wollaston struggled against the bowling of Bob Sayer in particular, and
his spell of 17 overs, 4 for 27 heavily restricted Wollaston's run scoring
opportunities to a minimum, and made life difficult for our batsmen.
Although last week's centurion Matthew
Jones (24) and skipper Steve Musgrave (25) both got started they could not
capitalise on their early efforts and it took a resolute 35 from James Cowell to
help push the total over the three figure mark.
In reply the home side got off to a decent
start and despite a Musgrave-induced mini collapse they reached their target in
the 43rd over with 5 wickets down. The Wollaston skipper finishing with 4 for 36
and taking his total wickets for the season to 39, one behind Cowell and
three behind leading wicket taker Chris Perry (42 at 18.40).
So despite losing by five wickets on the
last day of the season Wollaston finished in a very creditable fifth place in
the Premier. Just another four points would have secured a place in the top
four, but unfortunately it wasn't to be and Brixworth finished just above us.
However, it was another fantastic season
and a real achievement for skipper Steve Musgrave, the squad, the club, coaches,
supporters, vice presidents and sponsors.
SECOND ELEVEN PUSH PROMOTED POSH BUT LOSE
IN THE LAST OVER
Wollaston ll 168 all out in 50 overs
Peterborough ll 169 for 4 in 42.1 overs Lost 4 points
scorecard
In a
rain-interrupted game Peterborough Seconds scraped a win and at the same time
gained promotion to division two. David Clarkson (43) held the middle order
together but a firmly struck 44 from number seven Andy Kowal pushed the total to
a reasonable 168 all out in 50 overs.
In reply Jamie Perry, Andy Kowel and Adrian
Ward each got an early wicket to put the visitors on the back foot. However
skipper Bob Milne (74 not out) and number six Matt Milner (37 not out)
held firm and passed the target with just 5 balls to spare.
So with no victories after June 18th and
eleven defeats over the season the Seconds finished third from bottom after a
promising start.
THIRDS ARE PROMOTED
AFTER FINISHING RUNNERS-UP IN DIVISION THIRTEEN
With a game to spare the
Thirds gained promotion after losing just three games over the season. Fourteen
victories and one game rained off pushed the team up to second place.
The last game at Burton
on September 10th saw Wollaston needing to win and O.W's needing to lose to
allow us to finish champions. The first part of the equation went to plan but
unfortunately O.W's overcame Old Northamptonians to finish top of the table.
Wollaston lll 240 for
6 of 45 overs Burton 4th 175 all out in 44.4 overs Won 30
points
scorecard
Burton won the toss and
decided to bowl. Wollaston lost opener Brian Bartlett early on but fellow opener
Tom Hodson was joined by number three Nathan Dawson and together they changed
the innings around. Tom played a great supporting role to Nathan as the latter
proceeded to build his innings before smashing the ball to all parts of the
ground (mostly over the boundary!). He scored a magnificent 123 which included
nine sixes and ten fours before he was eventually bowled by Malc Craddock. Tom
made 30, Harry Broome 20 not out and Scott Bailey 25.
In reply Burton never
looked like reaching their target and after Alex Melia and Harry Broome removed
the openers, James Pegg ran through the middle order to finish with 5 for 32 off
eleven overs to secure a comfortable victory.
A good season all round
for the Thirds with Craig Boddington, Harry Broome, Nathan Richards and Nathan
Dawson all making their Wollaston Thirds' debuts.

SECONDS LOSE BY 5 WICKETS AT HOME TO ST CRISPIN'S
Wollaston 226 for 9 in 50 overs St
Crispin's 227 for 5 in 48.1 overs Lost 7 points
Although Wollaston set a
challenging score it eventually proved insufficient against the visitors who
looked down and out at the half way stage of their reply.
Andy Luck with 33, and
David Clarkson with 35 both led from the front before Andy Kowel smacked 36 not
out to reach a decent total against the team from Northampton.
After the break Darren King
was in fine form with the ball and reduced St Crispin's to 166 for 5.
Unfortunately for the hosts a stand of 111 between opener Mark Oliver (106 not
out) and number seven James Spencer proved unbreakable and the target was
reached in the 49th over.

Wollaston won the toss and elected to bat on a
wicket which kept low throughout the game. However, the hosts played the
conditions well and posted a healthy total of 214 for 7 in 45 overs. James Pegg
bowled his maximum 13 overs to great effect to finish with 2 for 54.
In reply Wollaston initially kept up with the
asking rate but Dragoon fought back and despite 58 from Paul Jones and 43 from
Scott Bailey the winning target proved just out of reach.

assisted by Chris Perry (2 for 66 off 17) and James Cowell ( 1 for 40 off 10).
Both
Mark Gibbs and Simon Driver chipped in with 15 very tight overs between them, to
help the cause.
In reply
the hosts never looked anything but comfortable, and with Matthew Jones in
imperious form - assisted by fellow opener Liam Bates, the stage was set for
number three Rob Newton to thrash 65 off 24 balls to take Wollaston to another

Wollaston's fielders and bowlers toiled hard and keep the visitors' score to an

In
reply the innings got off to a good start with Andy Silsby (15) and Haydn James

However, two delays for rain saw Wollaston needing to up their run rate to win and
the reliable Paul Jones (27 not out) and the hard hitting Craig Boddington (17

On a
seaming track Matthew Jones's 82 off 153 balls (including six fours and three

Put in
context, 194 was a handy total on a wicket that suited the seamers. But
thankfully for the visitors, none of the home bowlers could match the
performance of James Cowell who took 5 for 75 and rip the heart out the the
title favourites batting - and led Wollaston to a much deserved victory.

A fantastic
display of leg spin saw Podington reduced Podington to 193 for 9 in the maximum

figures of 6 for 48 off 13 overs. He was well backed up by the rest of the
attack with Jamie Perry picking up 2 for 38 off 12 overs.
I reply
Wollaston were in deep trouble after losing 8 wickets but David Clarkson (62)
and Jamie Perry (20) remained resolute and when the former finally departed,
five were needed with 9 wickets down. But with just 3 balls to spare Perry and
Adrian Ward scrambled the winning run - much to the delight of the home

21 from David Clarkson and
