PAUL JONES
Right Hand Opening Bat / Right Arm Over Slow Medium Paul, who correctly categorises himself as "an opening bat and occasional bowler" is presently the Club's First Eleven highest run scorer with 10,0493 runs at 27.40. He learned his early cricket on the green fields of Wellingborough School and made his Wollaston debut in 1970 before picking up his first trophy as part of the 1973 Division Two, title winning side. Through the seventies, eighties and nineties Paul helped lay the foundation for most of Wollaston's innings. He now bats anywhere between 1 and 9 for the Second Eleven and is considering donning the white coat when he finishes playing. His 81 First Eleven wickets were mainly gathered via his flattish off-spin, but now, when called on by the Second Eleven, he purveys a mean in-swinger which has reaped him 122 at 17.15. His ability to score on both sides of the wicket, build an innings - even on difficult tracks, and resolutely defend his castle, are some of the reasons he has been so successful. And without doubt he has the best on-drive in the club! His sweep - a stroke he has always been keen on, but some of us others not so keen - normally appears in July, and when executed correctly looks good. When not executed correctly, looks suicidal! He pays his cricket hard but fair; once as captain at Isham on a very hot day he demanded that one of the opposition fielders put on his cricket flannels and not shorts (his demand was answered) and at Horton he counted 12 opposition players on the pitch and had one removed. Paul always has a theory about the game and is an engaging debater and will always be willing to hold a philosophical discussion on anything from cricket to organic carrots. He is a hard working committee member who runs the Bar and has also served as secretary, first & second eleven captain, vice captain and chairman.
